        [COLOR=#000000! important]Saturday's winner ...

        1,000♦ UNLV REBELS - Every so often some information comes across my plate involving my hometown Rebels, and when it does, I have to act on it. And I'm not talking about nefarious, outlandish crap-information other scamdicappers talk about ... I don't claim to have "inside information" ... I am talking about hearing things from media sources, talking with boosters, speaking to local scouts and just overall insiders. It's a network I stay tight with, and the fact is, UNLV is in a much better situation this week than the Rams, and have all the motivation in the world to notch this win for so many reasons.

        Where should I start ...

        How about the fact that for as bad as the Rebels are on defense and for as bad as this team has played all season, it is still talking about going to a bowl game this postseason. My sources (practices are open, so as disclaimer, they're not involved with the team or university) are telling me that all week at Rebel Park spirits have been good and it appears the Rebels are rallying around hot-seat coach Mike Sanford.

        UNLV, which has gotten the toughest part of its schedule out of the way and needs to win the final three games to become bowl eligible, couldn't be more primed to open things up on offense against an even worse secondary. While the Rebels' Pass D ranks 85th in the country, the Rams rank 110th.

        That doesn't bode well being on the road and now having to face a two-quarterback offense and the all-time MWC career receptions leader in Ryan Wolfe (275).

        Colorado State, which comes to Sin City mired in a six-game losing streak, has the 94th-ranked defense that gives up more than 400 yards per game and the 100th-ranked Scoring D that is allowing more than 30 points per game.

        Now I know I have to address UNLV defense, which is one of the worst in the nation overall, but understand one thing about Colorado State - when its offense has scored, it's primarily been via the big play. This is not a team that is capable of sustaining long drives.

        So, at this point in the season, if the Rebels want to extend their season, it's all about knowing what the Rams are going to run and when ... not worrying so much about slowing down an ineffective offense that is 89th in the country.

        The last time the Rebels got into a game like the one I expect Saturday night, it was a shootout versus Hawaii, and they won it 34-33.

        Look at the way this season has gone for UNLV: it beat little-known Sacto State, 38-3; it came this "| |" close to beating Oregon State, but lost in a last-minute field goal; it beat Hawaii; it lost a tough one in Wyoming it could have easily won; and then it was nothing but powerhouse teams that served up powerhouse routs ... Nevada, BYU and Utah.

        The Rebels managed to snap a losing streak against New Mexico and a notorious road losing streak in conference play by beating the Lobos in Albuquerque and then it was off to Fort Worth against the best defense in the nation.

        As for the Rams, they won three straight to open the season, and have been brutal ever since. Injuries have taken their toll, as four defensive starters are out and a backup DB has been wearing a boot all week. Tight end Eric Peitz had shoulder surgery - he's done. Coach Steve Fairchild announced Thursday that Greg Peterson, who was in his second year as offensive coordinator, would be limited to recruiting duties.

        To say the Rams are in a bigger mess than the Rebels is an understatement.

        And this game is a pick'em. UNLV needs to win its biggest game of the season and it basically covers this game.

        Next week will be the team's next biggest game of the season, and so on down the line. But this week - Saturday night inside Sam Boyd Stadium - it's all about pride. It's all about playing for the postseason. It's all about playing for the coach's job. It's all about snapping a six-game home skid to the Rams. It's all about winning the game.

        And I like my chances with UNLV!

              The OVER is a solid bet though. Both teams lack a Def of any consequence.
