Football Prepares for UAB with Jeff Van Camp Under Center
Injury to Rusty Smith's Left Shoulder Cuts Senior Season Short.
Nov. 3, 2009
BCOA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University's football team began week eight of game preparation without senior quarterback Rusty Smith for the first time since 2005. Junior Jeff Van Camp a 6-foot-5, 210-pound fourth-year junior was named this week's starter on Monday and will assume the role as the Owls signal caller.
Van Camp started Tuesday's practice with the first team. The next two guys in line behind Van Camp are 6-foot-7, 210-pound freshman David Kooi and 6-foot-6, 225-pound freshman Graham Wilbert.
LW Rusty Smith went 23-for-45 for 304 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions for Florida Atlantic (2-5, 2-2). He left the game with five minutes to go with a shoulder injury in his non-throwing arm.
Jeff Van Camp:
2008: Played in four games...was 8-20-1 on the year for 55 yards...his longest pass was a 17 yard toss at ULL...became an important part of the team's offense and success...received the majority of snaps during spring ball.
2007: Saw action in three games...was 2-for-4 at Florida and 2-for-5 at Florida International for 19 yards...his long in both games was 13 yards.

UAB’s injury situation in the secondary was still muddy after Wednesday’s practice.
Safety Chase Daniel missed the past two weeks because of ef*fects from a concus*sion and hasn’t yet been cleared to play in Saturday’s non*conference game against Florida Atlan*tic at Legion Field. Cornerback Cornelius Richards missed Sat*urday’s win over UTEP, safety Justin Smartt has been out a few weeks and safety Elliott McGaskin hurt his neck against UTEP.
Chase Daniel and Hiram Atwater _ the team’s top two safeties _ each wore yellow jerseys once again on Wednesday. Daniel and Atwater stood and watched when the regular defense was working against the scout team.
“It’s hard to figure out who to pre*pare (to play on Sat*urday),” said UAB head coach Neil Cal*laway. “We have some who aren’t cleared to play yet but can do some things (in prac*tice). It may not be until Thursday until we know for sure.”
As of now, Saturday’s rotation at cornerback consists of Terrell Springs, Marquis Coleman and Hicks. The safety rotation consists of Atwa*ter, Carlisle, Ferson Stafford and Brock Ferguson.
That’s thin against a team that pre*fers to throw the ball, even though it will play without starting quarterback Rusty Smith on Saturday. The Owls average 301.7 yards passing per game this season and threw for 358 yards in a 49-34 win over UAB last season.
Springs gave a glimpse of what he expects opposing offensive coordina*tors to do.
“They’ll look at our pass defense and go at us 95 percent of the time,” Springs said. “They know our second*ary is hurt. I know they’ll put it in the air all day. We just got to make a play.”
UAB hasn’t made many plays against the pass the entire season. The Blazers enter this week’s game ranked last in the country in pass de*fense after allowing 324.1 yards per game through the air in the first eight games.
The injury news is a little better on offense even though the Blazers finished Saturday’s game without two of their top three run*ning backs. Justin Brooks missed the trip because of a shoulder injury, leaving Rashaud Slaughter and Daniel Borne to share the running back position. Slaughter left for good after hurting his leg in the third quarter and Dexter Barnett took some snaps at running back.
One of the low points this season came last week in Huntington when UAB was penalized 15 times in a 27-7 loss at Marshall.
In last W @ UTEP, QB Joe Webb passed for two touchdowns, ran for one score and even caught a touchdown pass in the win. Webb finished with 163 yards rushing. For the fourth time in the last five games, UAB did not have a turnover.
QB Joe Webb shattered the C-USA record last season for rushing yards by a quarterback with 1,021. Webb broke the old mark of 699 mark (held by SMU’s Justin Willis) set in 2007. Webb is well ahead of that pace this season as he has already amassed 983 yards through eight games...
He has also passed for 1060-55%-9TD/6INT.
UAB is ranked No. 9 in the country in rushing yards per game (230.0 avg.) and has rushed for more than 200 yards in 7-of-8 games this season.
FAU is #110 in total Def TY. I think coupling that stat with FAU losing Rusty and even though new SQB Beans is a SR, starting his 1st game on the rd at homecoming......UAB looking good.
