FACTS & STATS: Site: Hughes Stadium (30,000) -- Fort Collins, Colorado. Television: The Mtn. Home Record: Air Force 3-1, CSU 2-2. Away Record: Air Force 1-3, CSU 1-3. Neutral Record: Air Force 0-0, CSU 0-0. Conference Record: Air Force 3-2, CSU 0-4. Series Record: Air Force leads, 27-19-1.

GAME NOTES: For the second time this season, the Air Force Falcons try to battle back following an overtime loss as they settle in against the Colorado State Rams in a Mountain West Conference bout at Hughes Stadium in Fort Collins.

Back on October 3rd, the Falcons were taken down by Navy in a 16-13 overtime decision on the road and followed that up with another three-point setback, that being a 20-17 bow to nationally-ranked TCU at home. The academy would like nothing more than to avoid the same sort of letdown this weekend after it was downed by 19th-ranked Utah in Salt Lake City, 23-16, in overtime. The loss was the third in the last four games for Air Force and now has the team just a single game over .500 (3-2) in league play.

The Rams are having even worse luck than the Falcons right now, dropping five in a row after opening the campaign with three straight victories over the likes of Colorado, Weber State and Nevada. This past weekend, CSU awakened a sleeping giant in Ryan Lindley and the San Diego State Aztecs, watching the quarterback throw for more than 400 yards and six touchdowns in a 42-28 final at Hughes Stadium.

Last year the Falcons posted a 38-17 victory in their annual meeting with the Rams, pushing the academy to a 27-19-1 advantage in the all-time series.

Erik Soderberg knocked through three field goals last Saturday, including a 48-yarder in the fourth quarter that tied the game with Utah at 16-16 and sent the meeting into overtime. Unfortunately, after the Utes scored a touchdown in the bonus session it was all over for the academy. Connor Dietz, who got the starting nod at quarterback, converted 7-of-10 passes for 64 yards and also led the team with his 98 yards rushing, but it wasn't enough because only Jared Tew was able to get into the end zone for the Falcons. Whether it is Dietz or Tim Jefferson directing the offense, the passing game continues to be an afterthought, even though head coach Troy Calhoun has opened up the playbook a bit more in recent years. Heading into play this week the Falcons are second-to-last in passing nationally, averaging a mere 66.5 ypg. Generating 276.1 ypg on the ground can only get a team so far, especially when it has to fight from behind in order to catch up and remain competitive.

Against yet another nationally-ranked program from the MWC, the Falcons played very well again on Saturday and had a chance to win before being turned away at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Because the Falcons ran the ball so much, the defense for the squad was on the field for a limited time and held Utah to just 100 net rushing yards and 267 yards of total offense overall. Of the three sacks recorded by Air Force, one was logged by John Falgout who was also the top tackler for the group with 11 stops and recovered one fumble along the way. The 23 points allowed to Utah was the most this season by the Falcons and still the team ranks second in the conference and eighth nationally in scoring defense with just 13.3 ppg permitted. Another stat that heavily favors the Falcons is turnovers as the program is ranked first in all of the Football Bowl Subdivision with a plus-2.25 turnover per game in their favor. The squad has logged 10 interceptions, with three coming from Anthony Wright, another two apiece from Reggie Rembert and Jon Davis.

John Mosure ran into the end zone from six yards out and Grant Stucker hit Tyson Liggett with a 40-yard scoring pass, both drives taking place in the first quarter against the Aztecs and yet the Rams could not hold off the visitors. Dion Morton contributed with a 19-yard TD run and Mosure threw a 23- yard scoring pass to Zac Pauga for the final CSU score of the game on Saturday. Mosure finished up with a game-high 130 yards rushing on 20 attempts and Stucker went 13-of-27 for 182 yards, but the signal-caller was sacked twice and intercepted as many times. On a team that has scored just eight touchdowns on the ground, Mosure has three of those, while injured running back Leonard Mason has a pair but is still being listed as questionable for this coming weekend with a rib problem. Stucker has taken nearly every snap for the Rams thus far, resulting in his 208.8 ypg passing and 12 TDs, but he has also been picked off 11 times, and yet the Rams are still third in the conference in turnover margin with a plus-0.50 per contest.

The Colorado State defense appeared up to the task of keeping the Aztecs from putting too many points on the board, allowing just a single touchdown in the first half. However, it all broke down in the second half when SDSU tallied 35 points and went on to win by two touchdowns. The Rams did manage to limit San Diego State to a mere 72 yards rushing on 32 attempts, but considering the Aztecs went into the weekend as one of the weakest rushing teams in the nation it wasn't all that impressive an effort by the CSU defense come to think of it. Nick Oppenneer and Chris Gipson both tallied 10 tackles, while Mychal Sisson logged three TFLs. Sisson, who leads the team with 60 total stops, is also first with 9.5 TFLs and three sacks so far this season. Unfortunately, while Sisson is trying to get the job done at the line of scrimmage, the pass defense for the Rams has been less than satisfactory through eight games by giving up 279.5 ypg to rank ninth in the conference and 116th in the country this week.

Staying close with the likes of TCU and Utah means the Falcons are far from pushovers in the MWC this season. Unfortunately for the Rams, the same can not be said of them which is why their losing streak will probably continue on after this weekend.

this game is getting some big time plays at it as oregon revceived last week

if you can getthis at -3
at -3 this is definitely the best value on the board
    I dont use internet accounts
I certainly would but I dont have enough money on my debit card for the type of play i would make at -3 here

        INSIDE SLANT
Air Force sophomore Connor Dietz seemed to entrench himself as the Falcons' starting quarterback with his performance last week at Utah.
But on Monday it was revealed that Dietz had broken a bone in his right hand. He had surgery that will keep him out of action for at least three weeks.
That means sophomore Tim Jefferson, last year's Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year, will start on Saturday at Colorado State. Jefferson started Air Force's first three games this season but injured his right ankle in the third game at New Mexico.
He traded starts with Dietz after that game, but Dietz seemed to gain the upper hand after replacing Jefferson in the Oct. 17 game against Wyoming and leading the Falcons to a victory. He then performing well at Utah.
Now Jefferson has a second chance. And it comes with the Falcons facing Colorado State, the team against which Jefferson had one of his top games a year ago -- he completed 6 of 8 passes for 171 yards and two touchdowns.
Colorado State ranks 116th out of 120 teams in pass defense, so Jefferson and the Falcons could have an opportunity to jump-start a passing game that has averaged just 46.4 yards in the last four weeks.
"We're just going to have to execute really well in the running game because that's our bread and butter, and hopefully we can pop a couple passes in there and hit them for big yardage," Jefferson said.
At 4-4, Air Force needs two more victories to become bowl eligible. While a victory will move the Falcons one step closer, it also will keep them a step ahead of Colorado State, which finished just behind Air Force in the MWC last season.
"Any time Air Force and Colorado State get together, they tend to be very, very good football games, and I think this one will be another one," Air Force coach Troy Calhoun said.
"We've both played, especially here over the last month, extremely strong schedules. So I think both teams may be even better than what their records show."
        NOTES, QUOTES
--Air Force has scored just eight touchdowns in seven games against Football Bowl Subdivision opponents. Last season, the Falcons scored 19 touchdowns in their first seven games against FBS opponents.
--In 24 trips to the red zone against FBS opponents, Air Force has scored 18 times. But just six of those scores were touchdowns, as the Falcons have settled for 12 field goals.
--Air Force has won four of its last five games against Colorado State, including three in a row. In the five years before that stretch, Colorado State won four of the five games in the teams' series.
--Air Force leads the nation in turnover margin at plus-2.25 per game.
SERIES HISTORY: Air Force leads, 27-19-1 (last meeting, 2008, 38-17 Air Force).
SCOUTING THE OFFENSE: Sophomore quarterback Connor Dietz, who helped Air Force establish a bit better offensive rhythm last Saturday against Utah as the Falcons gained 318 yards, is out at least three weeks with a broken hand. So, sophomore Tim Jefferson will take back starting duties. Jefferson is considered the better passer of the two quarterbacks, so Air Force might call for more pass plays, especially against a Colorado State defense that ranks fourth-to-last in the country against the pass.
SCOUTING THE DEFENSE: Against Utah, Air Force's defense continued to make the case that it is by far the best defensive unit the academy has had in a decade. Take away the Utes' 90-yard touchdown pass from Terrance Cain to David Reed (during which two Air Force players missed tackles) and the 44 yards Eddie Wide ran to the end zone after scooping up a fumble early in the first quarter, and the Falcons limited Utah to just 108 yards of offense in regulation. Air Force ranks eighth in the country in scoring defense (13.2 points per game) and ninth in total defense (266.8 yards per game). The Falcons aren't doing it with smoke and mirrors. This unit is legit.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "You've got to get one. This isn't like stairs, where you can jump up three steps. You've got to get one. And the one's going to be hard. But it's doable." --Air Force coach Troy Calhoun, when asked about needing two victories to become bowl eligible.
        STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL
THIS WEEK'S GAME: Air Force at Colorado State, Oct. 31 -- Colorado State won four of its five meetings with Air Force from 1999 through 2003, and three of the Rams' victories in that stretch came by 10 or more points. But Air Force has flipped the series in recent years. The Falcons have won four of the teams' five meetings since 2004, including three straight -- the last two by 24- and 21-point margins.
KEYS TO THE GAME: Colorado State ranks 116th out of 120 teams in pass defense. But can Air Force take advantage? With sophomore Connor Dietz out with a hand injury, sophomore Tim Jefferson will be under center, and he is considered a better passer than Dietz. But the Falcons have struggled -- particularly in recent weeks -- throwing the ball and rank 119th in passing offense. Whether through the air or on the ground, Air Force needs to get more out of its offense, which has struggled to put up points.
        PLAYERS TO WATCH:
WR Kyle Halderman -- After missing the first six games of the season with a broken collarbone, the junior returned to lineup for the Falcons' Oct. 17 game against Wyoming, playing about 10 plays and failing to touch the ball. He was more involved last Saturday at Utah, catching three passes for 54 yards and running three times for 14 yards. He had two grabs for 99 yards, including a 74-yard touchdown, in last year's game against Colorado State.
CB Anthony Wright Jr. -- Colorado State likes to throw the deep ball, which puts stress on the Falcons' entire secondary, but mainly the corners, who can't bite on fakes or be beaten on double-moves.
K Erik Soderberg -- Since his overtime miss at Navy, Soderberg has made five consecutive kicks, including a clutch 48-yarder late in last Saturday's game at Utah that tied the score.
        ROSTER REPORT
--Sophomore QB Connor Dietz will miss at least three weeks because of a broken bone in his right hand. Dietz suffered the injury on the fourth play of last Saturday's game at Utah but did not leave the game. He had surgery on Monday and had two screws put in his hand.
--Junior CB/RET Reggie Rembert's status for Saturday's game was uncertain as of Tuesday. Rembert had to leave last Saturday's game at Utah after absorbing two big hits on consecutive kickoffs.
--Freshman OLB Alex Means will not play Saturday at Colorado State because of a mid-foot sprain.
