North Carolina State Wolfpack good at bye weeks

The Wolfpack football program had an open date for the scheduled slate of NCAA games on October 24th. The sports terminology for this is a bye week, and an all too common theme around the Wendell Murphy sports facility, headquarters of Coach Tom O’Brien’s Pack program, is a team in disarray entering the annual weekend off. The perception is that in each of O’Brien’s three years as head football coach the Pack has come limping into the bye week like a wolf searching for a dark cave to hide in.
The facts and statistics back that assertion up and that is what makes it all the more remarkable what happened after the previous two mid-season breaks. O’Brien’s teams come out looking and acting completely different and the facts and statistics are more juxtaposed than one can imagine. If NC State wants to resurrect a season that so far has resulted in a 3-4 record (0-3 in ACC) and a three-game losing streak, then the bye week time period between the 17th of October and the 31st will have to do the trick again.
In 2007 the storyline was just about the same as any football program in the first year of rebuilding under a new head coach. The team helped define the word futility to the Wolfpack faithful that jam-packed Carter-Finley Stadium over the course of the 1-5 start. One stat that stood out more than anything was that in four of the games the defense gave up on average 4.8 yards per carry, including having the Clemson Tigers come into Raleigh and feast for 340 rushing yards.
After a loss to Florida State on October 6th the team had their scheduled off-week to lick their wounds. In Greenville, NC, against in-state neighbor ECU, a remarkable transformation seemed to come about and the Pack started a four game win streak that afternoon with a convincing 34-20 road win. One player in particular that enjoyed success individually in unison with the team's turnaround was sophomore running back Jamelle Eugene of Naples, FL, and he summed up the improvement straightforward:

"I feel like we're buying more into the system now," Eugene said. "We tried to do it our own way, and that wasn't working. It got us a 1-5 record. So we're just buying into the coaching staff and what they're telling us to do and believing in each other a little more than we have."

On October 25, 2008 NC State left a mud-pile of a field at Maryland after being handed their fourth-straight defeat. Next was an off-weekend to again regroup before they were scheduled to play the remaining four games on the regular season schedule. At 2-6 (0-4 in ACC) there most likely were only a handful of glass-half-full fans, player parents and determined seniors who believed in their hearts that running the table and securing a Bowl berth were to come next.
That’s exactly what did unfold as the Wolfpack charged out of the bye week and downed the three in-state ACC neighbors, and then closed business at home against Miami to finish 6-6 and become eligible. Many outsiders, including the media, noted that the returning of players absent due to injury before the winning streak was the major influence.
True to form the sometimes under-spoken head coach was quick to point to the leadership of the seniors as the major catalyst needed to change the destiny of season. Led by the vocal determination of now-departed players like Andre Brown of the NY Giants, the rest of the team seemed revitalized and ready to prove that they could perform as good as anyone they lined up against. Talk that reached even the highest level of sports coverage claimed that up until the untimely injury of quarterback Russell Wilson right before halftime of the Papajohns.com Bowl the Wolfpack were playing at a level on par with almost anyone in nation. For once Coach O’Brien included in a media interview some of the theory behind the staff’s bye week operation:

“The first thing you have to do in an off-week is evaluate everything that you’ve done,” O’Brien said. “You have to evaluate yourself as a coach and you have to evaluate what you’ve asked of the players as a coach. What you have to do then is make an evaluation of their strengths and weaknesses and where you can make them stronger, which basically comes down to the fundamentals of the game. Specifically on defense, we have to cut out the long runs and long passes and you have to cut out the turnovers on offense.”

We live in the present, though the Wolfpack program is experiencing déjà vu in preparing for a showdown with Florida State this Saturday. They’ve gotten past half of the consecutive practice sessions provided over an open weekend and there are, once again, way more pressing questions than known answers about the quality of this program. With five games remaining the Pack will have to pull off another miraculous turn around and it will take four wins just to come back from the brink of Bowl season dead.
This year there are no players who missed substantial time before the break expected to return. In year three of Coach O’Brien’s tenure the rationale that the players and staff have got to get on the same page is not as influential as was back in 2007. So do the Wolfpack have the bye week season-changing mojo at their disposal again? What, besides the basic back-to-fundamentals approach the staff employs will be the catalyst? This time we should get the answer on Halloween night, whether it’s a super Pack or timid Werewolf cloak they come out with.

an article found that i have already mentioned in my notes
Nc state is just beat up with injuries
where in this case comng off of a bye week thye have no answers and no one coming back
they are just beat up and give up to many big plays

Miami Hurricanes' Sean Spence out for Wake Forest game

        By SUSAN MILLER DEGNAN

        sdegnan@MiamiHerald.com

University of Miami linebacker Sean Spence, one of the Hurricanes' best players on defense, is out for the Saturday game at Wake Forest.
Spence injured what appeared to be his left knee against Clemson last Saturday, went back in the game after halftime but was taken out when it was apparent he was too hobbled to play. He was put in a brace during the game.
UM linebacker Ramon Buchanan said after practice Tuesday morning that the other Hurricanes would have to step up in Spence's absence.
Coach Randy Shannon, who doesn't address the media Tuesday until late morning, told WQAM talk-show host Joe Rose that Spence would not play against the Demon Deacons. ``He's out,'' Shannon said.
``Against Clemson, when Sean went down, Coach put me in and I played good,'' Buchanan said. ``I played a lot of snaps last week. I'll probably play a lot more snaps this week coming up because we all know Sean is down for a little bit right now.''
The extent of Spence's injury has not been revealed. However, UM did not send out an injury report Monday night that is normally distributed if a player is going to have surgery or had surgery and is out for the season.
Spence, a second-year sophomore who played at Miami Northwestern High, was the Atlantic Coast Conference's Defensive Rookie of the Year last season. He started out slower than usual this season, but came on strong the past few weeks. He is fourth on the team in total tackles with 35 and has 5 ½ tackles for loss. He also has two sacks, a pass breakup and quarterback hurry.
Spence, who played on the weak side, started all seven games for the No. 18 Hurricanes (5-2, 2-2 ACC). Buchanan, who usually rotates at strong-side and weak-side, is expected to replace Spence

looking at cincy and northern Illinois being a double play
i had a ton of notes
and I really wanted to bet against both the teams I had a lot of information gathered for syracues and akrons game
            last week '
I had akron just being beat up as small school having no depth
I have just have not came up with much evidince that syracuse is a 16 points underdog
although just as I am inclined t look at syracuse as a play here its at 14
so again Im not the only one worjking this game
syracuse only allowed 7 points to penn state each quarter , so they consistantly didnt allow big plays to beat em
cincy should be a no play
but playing a t syracuse with the effort put up against penn state
syracuse gives up a lot of passing yards
I dont see cincy coming in here is should be close
but it could just as easy get out of hand quickly
            I had upset thoughts here
Now I am just dropping this game
that means I have dropped northern illinois as a play also
last week I just had akorn pinned out to be a bad team
and syracuse didnt do as expected
yet only in one game did they get blown out and that took 2 turnovers to happen 'to west virginia

Ive got some other games to do soon as I wake up
of couirse Ive got to go to sleep first
            tennessee
            ole miss
            oklahoma state
            oregon
            boston college
            g tech
            temple
            arizona state
ill tell you a game that I really like
dont know how i would match it up
but arkansas -38 against ball state that should come real easy
            coming from -36
I mean central michigan put up 56-8 against em and now they have no offense
arkansas needs to work on a lot of things and it want be nealing the ball down
of those i ve mentioned you could probable go ahead and right me down for arkansas
i dont really see a lot to pull out of this one
in two of the last 3 games they scored 10 or less points in confernece play so they arent much

Cant remember If I wrote it already
I certainly have dropped northern Illinois game
Now it seems I need to look at this game once again
Getting 11- even 12 here with akron may actually be a play
I havent seen one area of interest that illinois get credibility
                      to smash mouth this team
                      cant get into this game
got so many more better plays than this one
                      go back to akron

Michigan state , noit sure if nichols is a good thing

NEXT GAME: Michigan State at Minnesota, Oct. 31 -- After nearly pulling an upset under the lights in front of a raucous home crowd, the Spartans will try to avoid an upset in a similar environment on the road. The Golden Gophers are coming off a 38-7 loss at Ohio State.
THIS WEEK'S MISSION: Recover emotionally. That was the mission after a shocking upset loss to Central Michigan. And after a heartbreaking loss at Notre Dame. And that's the mission again. So far, the Spartans have been able to move forward, but this will be the toughest task yet.
OCTOBER AT A GLANCE: The Spartans are 3-1 in October, winning three straight -- over Michigan, Illinois and Northwestern -- before the loss to Iowa. A victory at Minnesota would cap a very good month.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "It was a little surreal for me. Just stunned." -- Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio, on the frantic finish to the Iowa game
                        STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL
LOOKING GOOD: Redshirt freshman DT Jerel Worthy continues to dominate the interior. He was constantly in Iowa's backfield, although he did have a pair of costly offside penalties.
STILL NEEDS WORK: True freshman TE Dion Sims finally got more opportunities downfield, but Sims dropped a pair of perfect passes from Kirk Cousins. He had displayed nothing but sticky hands before Saturday's loss.
STAR WATCH: Junior LB Greg Jones had another big day at the office, racking up 12 tackles against Iowa. Jones leads the nation with 97 tackles.
CRITICAL DECISION: Is Edwin Baker the Spartans' starting RB? He had a better night than starter Larry Caper, with 68 yards including a 37-yard sprint. Caper had a fumble that was recovered by the Spartans. Don't be surprised if Baker gets more carries at Minnesota.
                        ROSTER REPORT:
--Sophomore QB Keith Nichol did not play for the second straight week. Nichol suffered some pain during the week after his injured left elbow was hit, Mark Dantonio said. Nichol dislocated the elbow in an Oct. 10 win at Illinois. Dantonio indicated that Nichol should be OK to go at Minnesota.
--Sophomore S Trenton Robinson did not play because of a foot injury suffered in last week's win over Northwestern. Michigan State has not announced the specifics or severity of Robinson's injury, but he was in a walking boot last week.
--Senior DE Trevor Anderson was able to play despite a sprained ankle suffered in last week's game. Anderson was visibly hobbling after a few plays, but he was able to go the whole way.

Penn state is in as my play

penn defense has 7 int ratio to 1 touch down pass
three straight conference games daryll clark has yet to have thrown an interception
                              getting credibility to the line
the past three years the average score is 6.4 win
and penn states chances of a national title game was shot last weeks with Iowas win
so resting not worrying with ohio state seems pointless at this given time

something I really like that I had go dig up for my self
damn if i nedda n editor and I could make some real money authoring columns
in every case this year with competition play
syracuse put up 17 points in the 1st quarter
minnesota put up 7 points in the first quarter
purdue put up 14 points the first quarter
                              indiania put up 14 points
I did write every well not mighigan state
well they were sat down until the third quarter where they put up 17 on em in that quarter
here is enough to see a team that needs to stop penn state early to keep this game close
13 pints is the points total penn state has given up in three games
4 games ago they gave up 17 to illinois but 14 coming in the 4th quarter
as they also scored 21 them self
penn state is a very good team with strength to take over the second half
my notes from second half points came from last weeks ,
i have substantiated this while playing michigan they settled for a field goal and a coupkle of concedding possesion in the 4th
17 or more points were for the taken if wanted
having just tht doubt after the illinois game about a back door and north western winning last after traiing 25
yeah I was a bit worried
but a team like michigan known for its comeback in the 4th quarter had very little to say agaainst penn state
in fact not scoring the entire second half
                              so two teams here '
one that takes the game over in the second half and one team that gives it away in the first half
penn state is a play at -14 and as one of my strongest plays
i dont know who reads my notes but thats my play going tonight to meet with bigtenguy
we will have a debate as a team and jared will try to talk us out of thisplay with his notes
i think ive got some good notes below worth reading

the above is notes that I have highlighted in my notes
as it is repeated once again
                              skipping through
really great articles a must read and should be pointed out in debate tonight

I actually found an article that had the same predition on this game with many of our leans going in our favor
also having a similar prediction on the penn state game
I have but all gotten off the penn state game although I feel like
penn state will score more like 28 points the second half
penn state is just too banged up to make a strong pick here
and a team that trailed 25 points and wins is a disaster in the making
penn state teaser might be the way to go here
they are indeed 4-5 points better at worse case solution
In somewhat of a an after thought here Penn state could boxed in forced to pass
where I have penn state winning here 35-10
as they were against michigan last week passing resulting from lacking the depth in rb
with an Ohio state game next week
passing this game rather than a good ole fashioned smash mouth heads up game
                              brings much attention
they want be guilty of looking ahead but needs to prepare to be healthy for a good ohio state team
Penn state aslo took this same strategy with minn prior to playing michigan throwing for over 287 yards
with 32 paqssing attempts on 22 completions having kept the ball in possession for over 42 minutes
on this day penn state faikled to get into the endzone the time they should had with those numbers and only puntind three times for the entire game when they rested several starters
against michigan was certainly a differnt story having 4 passing touchdowns
                              and no rushing touch downs
Minn . purdue , michigan state while playing northwestern had 7 passing touchdowns combined
(penn st) only allowing 1 touch down pass dating back to the Iowa game
                              but suprisingly Have 7 ints
penn defense has 7 int ratio to 1 touch down pass
three straight conference games daryll clark has yet to have thrown an interception
                              getting credibility to the line

                              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Penn State vs. Northwestern on money downs: Tom Bradley's defense leads the Big Ten in preventing conversions on both third down (30.4 percent) and fourth down (25 percent). Northwestern has attempted and converted more third downs (51.1 percent) and fourth downs (58.3 percent) than any other league team this season. If the Wildcats' offense can control the clock and stay on the field, it might hang around for a while. If Penn State holds its ground on the money downs, it should pull away.
                              Big Ten, what

                              Big Ten picks: Week 9
                              October 29, 2009 9:02 AM
                              Posted by ESPN.com's Adam Rittenberg

Seven FBS teams continue their quest for perfection on Halloween. After going 5-0 last week, so do I.

Iowa 23, Indiana 10: This is the week the Hawkeyes finally create some distance between themselves and their opponent. Iowa struggles to get the run game going without Adam Robinson, but quarterback Ricky Stanzi and wideout Marvin McNutt connect for two touchdowns. Indiana's talented wide receivers struggle to find openings in the Hawkeyes' secondary as No. 4 Iowa improves to 9-0.

Ohio State 38, New Mexico State 3: A lot of folks are calling for a shutout, and it could happen as the nation's worst offense faces the seventh-ranked scoring defense. The Aggies somehow get a field goal but Ohio State rolls as quarterback Terrelle Pryor once again runs for 100 yards and DeVier Posey catches another touchdown from his good friend. One of Ohio State's running backs also emerges in this one.

Wisconsin 24, Purdue 21: This is a very tough call, and if the game were played in West Lafayette, I'd probably go with the streaking Boilers. Big Ten teams struggled coming off of bye weeks last year, and Wisconsin will start slow before its aggressive defense forces some Purdue miscues. Running back John Clay turns in a nice performance, and quarterback Scott Tolzien limits mistakes.

Michigan 33, Illinois 24: One team looked like a mess last week; the other team has been a mess all season. I could see Illinois keeping this close for a while, but the Illini are so bad at defending the run and Michigan will capitalize with Denard Robinson, Carlos Brown, Tate Forcier and maybe Brandon Minor (if healthy). The Wolverines rarely pass the ball and pull away in the fourth quarter.

Penn State 28, Northwestern 14: This could be a trap game for Penn State, sandwiched between Michigan and Ohio State, but too many matchups favor the Nittany Lions. Quarterback Daryll Clark takes advantage of a banged-up Wildcats secondary and wideout Derek Moye has a big game. Mike Kafka makes some plays for Northwestern, but an underperforming offensive line can't contain Penn State for 60 minutes.

Michigan State 21, Minnesota 13: No Eric Decker plus an improving Michigan State defense equals problems for Minnesota. The Gophers defense will keep this one close, but Kirk Cousins and Blair White connect for a fourth-quarter touchdown as Michigan State bounces back from a heartbreaking loss to Iowa. We'll see a decent amount of MarQueis Gray from Minnesota, but linebacker Greg Jones keeps him in check.
                              1. Iowa in search of style points: After rising to No. 4 in the BCS standings, Iowa can help its cause and possibly win over more pollsters with a convincing win against Indiana (ESPN, noon ET). The Hawkeyes have fallen behind in seven of their eight wins and own only one victory by more than 11 points this fall. Indiana isn't a pushover this season, but the Hoosiers are vulnerable in the secondary. Iowa is banged up entering the game, as freshman running back Brandon Wegher makes his first career start in place of the injured Adam Robinson. The Hawkeyes also could use true freshman backs Brad Rogers and Josh Brown.

                              2. Bowl play-in game at TCF Bank Stadium: Minnesota and Michigan State both sit at 4-4 entering Saturday night's clash (Big Ten Network, 8 p.m. ET). Much like last week's Indiana-Northwestern game, this contest could determine a postseason berth. Michigan State is clearly the hotter team but must bounce back from a heartbreaking loss to Iowa. Linebacker Greg Jones leads a rapidly improving Spartans defense against a Gophers offense that has produced just seven points in its last two games. Minnesota can't afford a late-season collapse for the second straight season, especially with so much experience on the roster.

                              3. Joey Elliott vs. Scott Tolzien: One quarterback struggled with turnovers early in the season but has turned things around; the other started fast but has thrown five interceptions in his last two games. Elliott really seems to be hitting his stride, and he leads a confident Purdue team into Camp Randall Stadium, where it won in 2003. Wisconsin has dropped consecutive games and needs Tolzien to limit mistakes against an opportunistic Boilermakers defense. The Badgers' banged-up offensive line should be well rested coming off a bye week and needs to keep Big Ten sacks leader Ryan Kerrigan away from Tolzien.

                              4. Lions try to avoid Cat trap: Penn State snapped its losing streak at Michigan Stadium in convincing fashion last week. Now the Nittany Lions head to Northwestern's Ryan Field (ESPN, 4:30 p.m. ET), which hasn't been the easiest place to notch big wins. Since joining the Big Ten, Penn State is 4-2 in Evanston, but three of the victories have come by five points or fewer. The Lions rallied for a dramatic win in 2005 to spark their Big Ten title season. Penn State comes in hot, while Northwestern is banged up but revived after the biggest comeback in team history.

                              5. Quarterback questions in Champaign: Big Ten play hasn't been kind to Michigan freshman quarterback Tate Forcier, who has completed just 38 of 81 attempts with two touchdowns and three interceptions in losses to Michigan State, Iowa and Penn State. Forcier and classmate Denard Robinson need to redeem themselves against Illinois, which ranks last in the Big Ten in both total defense and rush defense. Illinois' starting quarterback once again remains a mystery, as senior Juice Williams and freshman Jacob Charest both will see action.

                              6. Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor: The Buckeyes don't have much to gain from Saturday's game against New Mexico State, which owns the nation's worst offense and will have a rough time putting up points. But it does provide Pryor another opportunity to make strides before next week's huge trip to No. 12 Penn State. Ohio State needs to decide how it wants to use Pryor the rest of the way. My plan? He runs the ball 17-22 times a game and throws deep when the opportunity presents itself.

                              7. Gophers begin life without Eric Decker: Minnesota's star senior wide receiver is out for the rest of the regular season after straining his foot in Saturday's loss to Ohio State. Decker has been the Gophers' only consistent weapon on offense this season. Minnesota needs a better performance from junior quarterback Adam Weber and an offensive line that has endured inconsistency throughout the season.

                              8. Indiana's ends vs. Iowa's tackles: For Indiana to have any shot at an upset in Iowa City, defensive ends Jammie Kirlew and Greg Middleton must apply steady pressure to Hawkeyes quarterback Ricky Stanzi. Iowa entered the year with the Big Ten's top tackles tandem in Bryan Bulaga and Kyle Calloway, though the Hawkeyes rank eighth in the Big Ten in sacks allowed (17). Kirlew ranks fourth in the league in both sacks (5.5) and tackles for loss (13.5), so keeping him away from Stanzi will be key.

                              9. Zook's reception at home: Illinois athletic director Ron Guenther says Ron Zook will be back in 2010, a decision that didn't sit well with much of Illini Nation. It will be interesting to see if the team can show some sign of progress on its home field against a sputtering Michigan team. If it's more of the same, you can bet the boo birds will be out for Zook, whose team is headed to a last-place finish for the third time in his five seasons in Champaign.

                              10. If Penn State holds its ground on the money downs, it should pull away
