wow, i've never heard of a comment like that before in such a crucial part of the game.

PENN STATE backers got screwed and they should be filling shitty now.

3rd down and Penn State spikes the ball?

USC DE was offside on the 4th down play

but there must have been lots of people standing in Las Vegas

Commentators always say stuff like that when the line is in question in the last minute or two, especially in garbage time. They all bet on games like the rest of us degenerates

        No he wasn't.

I said "free play" when it happened live, no flag, I was like "wow really?"

Rewound it on my Tivo and watched it a bunch of times including slow-motion. He just got a great jump, nowhere close to offsides.

I know a miracle cover would have been nice for you PSU backers, but that wasn't offsides. I thought so too, but triple-checked it and can promise you it wasn't.

Al Michaels always mentions the betting angles in the final minutes when it comes up, without ever mentioning the actually spread.

vegas dave said they weren't offside. Well today they report that they were offside, and I saw the replay on the Morning Extra, and yes that defender was offside.

so vegas dave must have been that ref.

Who is they? Whoever "they" is, it sounds a lot like it could just be sour grapes that their wager lost, because I really don't believe he was.

Can you link me to a reputable source saying it was offsides? I'll gladly admit that I was mistaken if a source outside of Penn State/blogville said it was offsides.

I also find this hard to believe. Why would the NCAA admit anything when the game wasn't in doubt, and on an offsides play?

I also have watched it in slow motion for like 20 times and it seems like the center's hand starts moving exactly at the same time the DE started sprinting, so in slow motion I would say it is not offside but I can't believe they didn't call it in real time, in real time it looked like he was 2 steps offside.

Would have been nice if Penn State got the last TD, would have made a good day into a great day. But at least it wasn't like I got a bad beat with Penn St. because they were dominated for most of the game.

It definitely had the illusion of an offsides because the USC defender was the only player to jump when the ball was snapped (the rest of the line still hadn't moved). But if you watch it, you can clearly see Clark stomp his foot for timing and then hike it. Had he used a hard count, he definitely would have drawn the defender off, but he telegraphed the snap and the defender read it perfectly.

Usually when a defender gets that good of a jump, its offsides; again, thats why in real time I said "Wow, free play"... but there is such a thing as perfectly timing your jump too.
