    2006 Iowa Football Breakdown
The Iowa Hawkeyes have alot of talent returning this year to make another run towards a big 10 title, and with coach Kirk Ferentz leading this team again they just might achieve that accomplishment.

The Hawkeyes won 10 or more games each season over a 3 year period from 2002-2004 season, and i don't see this run stopping this year. with 4 starters this season, including RB albert young, who rushed for over 1,300 yards last year, and QB drew tate (who started 24 straight starts) who threw for 2,828 yards and 22 TD’s in 2005.

    09/02/06 Montana Iowa City, IA
    09/09/06 Syracuse Syracuse, NY
09/16/06 Iowa State Iowa City, IA
    09/23/06 Illinois Champaign, IL
09/30/06 Ohio State Iowa City, IA
    10/07/06 Purdue Iowa City, IA
    10/14/06 Indiana Bloomington, IN
    10/21/06 Michigan Ann Arbor, MI
10/28/06 Northern Illinois Iowa City, IA
    11/04/06 Northwestern Iowa City, IA
    11/11/06 Wisconsin Iowa City, IA
    11/18/06 Minnesota Minneapolis, MN
i think this hawkeyes team could beat ohio state this year, because there playing them at home. i also feel that they can beat michigan in the "big house" snappiing there current 22 game winning streak there.

my projection is the hawkeyes will go 10-2 this season.

Dan, I have Iowa going at least 11-1, and playing for the national championship.

Honestly, none - I think they go 12-0, but if they lose one it will be at Michigan. The good thing is that Iowa has been very good against Michigan lately, and Ferentz is an infinitely better coach than Lloyd Carr.

Amen to that quote. Lloyd Carr blows goats.

They will screw up like every year and Iowa State will beat them again. Making it 7 of the last 9 years Iowa State will have beat Iowa.

I agree. Iowa going 12-0 is a bold statement, but I like the idea with a quarterback like drew tate. However, there is another quarterback that will own the big ten this year.

i just can't see them going undefeated this year though guys.

iowa lost 2 stud defensive stars last season to the draft, and i'm not quite as sold on there defense plugging up those two holes as you guys seem to be.

I'm not saying they're one of the five best teams in the nation, but besides Michigan, who has more than a small chance of beating them? No one.

when i first capped this team, if felt either ohio state or Minnesota could beat them. the one i did feel that would beat them this year was Iowa State.

I like Iowa St., but that's not gonna happen. I would have given Minnesota a little better chance if Russell was on the team. It would take a minor miracle for Ohio St. to beat them, IMO. Talk about a team needing to rebuild defensively.
On a related note, Northern Illinois is going to light up the scoreboard in Columbus - that's an over special from way back. The line I made out was 61 - I saw Betmill posted 47. True hilarity. That will be a 38-28 type game.

Bodog has the Hawks at 6-1 to win the Big Ten...and if you like that I think you have to like Tate at 25-1 to win the Heisman. Seems like he's been the QB for the last decade.

I fired away on Iowa to win the Big 10 +650 at Olympic, as well as their team total wins over 9

Razz the Buckeyes always reload on defense. Plus they still have a few good veterans returning. If Tressel lets this offense roll, there is no stopping them. That is my only worry about this season with the Bucks is the conservative nature of Jim Tressel. I find it suprising you are not giving them much of a chance against the Hawkeyes. Also, those Hawks on D might be worse off than the Bucks.

I actually think their defense is in trouble with all the good QBs in the Big 10 - the pass defense is the real concern, they'll be OK against the run, probably even above average.
But, when I say I don't give OSU much of a chance in Iowa City, it's not an indictment of their program. It's much more because Iowa has the biggest home-field advantage in the land. 21-1 last 22 home games (lone loss in OT), and they are 31-11-1 ATS since Ferentz arrived. I'm not betting them to lose at home until proven differently.

I placed a bit on Tate to win the Heisman at Pinny (+3700).

the only way he wins the heisman would have to go undefeated. i just don't really see that happening IMO

Just thought I'd post it for reference if Iowa has their magical season. I think its worth a nibble.

                                      Brady Quinn +300
                                      Drew Tate +3700

Must be a lot of Irish lovers out there for a line like that.

i don't know if it's really the irsh lovers or not. i think it's a combo between the "hype" and it's a public type team that makes that line so low on quinn.

looks like there is a couple of players are suspended for the season opener.

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Iowa defensive end Kenny Iwebema and wide receiver Herb Grigsby were each suspended Wednesday for the Hawkeyes' Sept. 2 season opener against Montana for violating team policy.

A statement released by Iowa said coach Kirk Ferentz would have no further comment on the suspensions.

Iwebema also missed the first week of fall practice for what Ferentz called "personal issues."

Iwebema, a 6-foot-4, 270-pound junior, is considered one of the nation's top defensive linemen. He is on the preseason watch list for the Ted Hendricks Defensive End of the Year Award after having seven sacks in 2005.

Grigsby, also a junior, is expected to play a major role in Iowa's offense this season. He caught 25 passes last season for 335 yards and three touchdowns in a backup role.
