I put in a transaction an hour and a half ago, since then the unconfirmed transactions have increased by more than 20,000, with the number not decreasing at any point. Are all the miners taking a break?

Well, maybe 3:00 Pm is prime night where you are, but that is afternoon around here.

The book who paid out 914.634 sat/B as a fee. Is that good?

Maybe you're just having a bad day, but you could have said that in a much more pleasant way. You bring up a great point but you said it in such a douchey way that no one will care about it.

For what it's worth I've been waiting 8 hours for my latest transaction to go through (https://blockchain.info/tx/45be0c12c...c4ab8e6c7745cf) So I feel the OP's pain.

For what it's worth I just got my first confirmation on this transaction. Took just short of 10 hours. I'm ready for the hard fork to happen...

No way in hell that could be the fee. The average/default is around 120.

Holy cow. That is an outrageously high fee. I had to see it to believe it myself.

I sent a 1.76 fee on a $53 transaction 30 minutes ago and nothing. That kind of fee just be an almost instantaneous confirmation. But because it ended up being 4 outputs making it a 668 byte transaction the fee only came out to 148 s/b....

Even with that large of a fee, it still took roughly 8 hours to get first confirmation.
