A unit is usually 1% of your gambling bankroll. This is why it's usually a constant. If your gambling bankroll is $1000 and you win 100 units ($1000) usually your gambling bankroll would still be $1000 and the rest would just be profit. In Vaughany's case if he has stated that a unit is $10 he would probably be up $3630 according to his units. You can always change your bankroll, but most handicappers keep it about the same. This makes it a lot easier to keep track.

If you were to follow someone's pick you would be best off seeing what there unit sizes are and make adjustments to what works for you based on your bankroll. Just adjust your units to what you are comfortable and keep them constant until you want to increase or decrease your bankroll. Units make things very easy because they allow people to bet based on their bankroll rather than betting based on someone else's.

It just makes more sense if each bet was a percentage of the current bankroll. It would make it a lot easier for people to tail and understand your confidence in each play. For example: 50 units could seem like a huge play, but what if your bankroll is 5000 units? it would be necessary to mention that. (of course this makes units and progress incredibly hard to track, which is why im sure V uses a constant value) It doesnt seem right if your bets are still relative to your original principal.. it would not be a effective strategy for growth. Its like if i play 50NL... but my bankroll has reached over 100 buyins.... why would i still be playing 50NL? wouldnt i move to higher stakes?

You are right. It's hard to figure out exactly what's going on for every handicapper. If you follow their numbers though you should be able to adjust and figure out what to do yourself.

As for your poker example, you can win 1000 buy ins and still not change. The profit you make is profit until you decide you want it to be considered bankroll. Therefore if you make 10 units on an event your bankroll wouldn't change on the next one and your unit size would be the same. If someone is grinding 50NL to make some extra money maybe they can't afford to hold all the money they win into the account. Many people gamble as a way to make extra money here and there. Ideally, it would be best to keep building the bankroll and making larger plays, but this doesn't always work and the money you have in your account sometimes means more to you in your wallet than in your sportsbook.
