Golden State won its first game in franchise history on Wednesday, beating the Washington Mystics by two, but should come flying back down to Earth against the Sparks. These two teams already played last week in their season opener, and L.A. took advantage of a Valkyries starting lineup made up of players who likely wouldn't start on any other team in the W.
While veterans Kayla Thornton, Julie Vanloo, and Tiffany Hayes had some bright moments in the loss to the Sparks, none of the three are a real threat this late into their careers. This is a lineup built from veterans nearing retirement and young unproven players who didn't stick on other rosters for a reason.
The Sparks handled the Valkyries with ease the first time around, and it should be much of the same in the rematch. Golden State doesn't have the defensive talent to slow down Kelsey Plum, who dropped 37 while going 11-for-19 from the floor and 11-for-11 from the charity stripe in the win, and she has plenty of reinforcement in Dearica Hamby and Azura Stevens.
It's worth noting that Rickea Jackson is out with a concussion after missing the Sparks' loss to the Phoenix Mercury, but even without her in that defeat, they only lost by three on the road as a 4.5-point underdog. In Jackson's absence, Stevens popped off alongside Plum.
As long as they have Plum, who's averaging the second-most points in the WNBA (26.7), the Sparks should once again beat up on a stitched-together roster. Los Angeles could even be a sneaky long-shot title contender once Cameron Brink is back from her knee injury.
