Will Hill Sportsbook to no longer service new Australian customers

Will Hill Sportsbook (SBR rating A) is no longer servicing new Australian customers. An email was sent to players this morning informing them of the operational change. SBR followed up with WillHill management, who provided comment on the decision. Australian players are asked to request withdrawals from the cashier.

The e-mail players received:

WillHill: "Following previous communications, please be advised that we have taken the decision to withdraw our Sports betting service for any customer registered in Australia. Any real cash funds held in your account will now appear in your main William Hill account and you can arrange withdrawal of these funds through the ‘My Account’ section of our site."

SBR spoke with WilliamHill.com management, who stated that the company could not continue to service new Australian customers as the company is in the process of applying for a Nevada gaming licence. Under current Australian law, the Interactive Gambling Act, enacted in 2001, makes it an offense punishable for up to $1.1 million per day for any organisation which provides casino and poker games to Australian residents.

Whilst no company has ever been tried under the Australian law, WillHill's decision to pull out of a jurisdiction where its service was not in full compliance with local law makes it easier for the company to pass the intense scrutiny of a US-based licence.

SBR will update this report in the event that new information becomes available.
