Two Online Sportsbooks Refund Dustin Johnson Masters Bets

Professional golfer Dustin Johnson recently announced his withdrawal from the 2017 Masters due to injury, and sports bettors are either livid or counting their blessings depending on how their sports betting site handled the scratch.

At least two popular online sports betting sites decided to refund bets, while others presumably stuck with house rules.

Heritage Sports (SBR rating A+) advised SBR that their sportsbook refunded all futures wagers including Dustin Johnson. BetOnline (SBR rating A+) tweeted a similar announcement that their sportsbook

Traditionally futures wagers have what's referred to as "action". It is common to see labeling such as "all bets have action, no refunds" on tennis and golf tournaments, though in the event that sportsbooks do not have such labeling, it is essential that players check the sportsbook rule section of the website to verify how each sport is handled. 

ESPN reported that Las Vegas sportsbooks were similarly divided on how they handled the bet.

Many online sportsbooks will also reference the "Vegas standard" when rules aren't spelled out for obvious or miscellaneous scenarios. For example, let's say a sportsbook didn't specifically say points scored in overtime count toward a full game wager on the total - it is universally known based on the wager is graded in Las Vegas and online that the sportsbook will handle it that way. The only time a sportsbook would need to update their rules is if they decided to for instance grade something in a manner that is unique to their business and not in line with industry standard.
