Tuesday’s Sports BIT Show: Yankees-Orioles, Astros-Twins & NCAA Week 1 Lines

New York Yankees At Baltimore Orioles

It’s Game 2 of a three-game set. The Orioles ended a seven-game losing streak in Monday’s opener with a 3-2 win. The Yankees wasted Aaron Judge’s MLB-leading 17th homer. Orioles center fielder Adam Jones was a late scratch from the starting lineup and ended up missing a third straight game with a sore hip. It’s not clear if he will play here. The Yankees go with young right-hander Luis Severino (3-2, 3.11) on Tuesday. Severino has allowed three or fewer runs in each of his past four starts, and has just once been touched up for more than four runs this season. His season debut was April 7 in Baltimore as Severino took a no-decision in allowing four runs in five innings. Severino has the highest average fastball velocity in the majors this year (50 innings pitched or more) at 97.2 mph. The Orioles’ Chris Tillman (1-1, 4.43 ERA) makes his 20th career start against the Yankees. He's 8-6 lifetime against them, including 2-0 last year.

Houston Astros At Minnesota Twins

The Astros stomped the Twins in Game 1 of this series featuring the leaders of the AL West and AL Central divisions. The pitching matchup would appear to favor the Twins in Game 2 as it’s 23-year-old right-hander Jose Berrios (3-0, 1.66), the franchise’s top pitching prospect. In three major-league starts, Berrios has allowed a total of four runs over 21 2/3 innings of work. Opposing teams are batting just .111 off him this year. In 2016, Berrios was an ugly 3-7 with an 8.02 ERA at the big-league level. Houston’s Mike Fiers starts for an injured Charlie Morton. Fiers (1-2, 5.21) is allowing 3.3 walks per nine innings and 3.5 homers per nine, that latter number the worst in baseball. Fiers has allowed 18 HRs, at least one in every game, and multiple homers in six of nine. He had been demoted to the bullpen but Morton’s injury changed that.

College Football Week 1 Line Movement

Teddy & Pauly look at some interesting line moves for the first weekend of the college football season. For example, Boise State opened at -5 vs. Troy but has been bet up to -11. Oklahoma State opened at -10 vs. Tulsa but is up to -17. LSU vs. BYU in Houston has risen from Tigers -8 to -11. The 2016 season begins with a handful of games on Saturday, Aug. 26, including Stanford-Rice in Sydney, Australia. The LSU game will be BYU’s second of the year as the Cougars open vs. Portland State on Aug. 26.  For LSU, it will be the first regular season game with Ed Orgeron as the full-time coach and with offensive coordinator Matt Canada calling plays. The Tigers opened the 2014 season with a 28-24 victory over Wisconsin in Houston's NRG Stadium and wrapped up the 2015 season in the venue with a decisive 56-27 win over Texas Tech in the Texas Bowl.
