Sportsbooks finally had the moment that they were waiting for after being soundly beaten by players for essentially the entire NFL playoffs. A majority of sports bettors were on the Green Bay Packers to win and cover against the Atlanta Falcons, including one brave soul who rolled over his winnings starting with $300 after eight Packers victories into a $28,000+ ticket in Las Vegas.
Packers vs. Falcons Spread
56% of tickets were on Aaron Rodgers and company to cover the closing spread of 6 points. It was not meant to be as the Falcons led throughout and jumped out to a 10-0 lead after the first quarter. The Odds Couple's Mike Brenner had plenty of reason to celebrate as his prediction of Atlanta -4.5 in the first half easily cashed as the dirty bids shut the Packers out 24-0 after the opening 30 minutes of play. The Falcons would go on to win 44-21. Players also lost the popular play of teasing the Green Bay Packers to be 13.5 point underdogs.
Packers vs. Falcons Moneyline
The Packers had 85% of wagering tickets at A+ rated sports betting site BetOnline and over 60% at online sportsbooks on the SBR Odds grid. The Falcons closed around -250 to win, but plenty more players rolled the dice at the better than plus 200 odds on the Green Bay Packers, so a $1,000 wager would have returned $2,000 if Green Bay had gotten the job done. The lone victory for players was the Packers to win the third quarter.
Packers vs. Falcons Total
Much discussion was generated by the historic NFL playoff total of 60.5 points, which closed at 59.5 to 60 at most sportsbooks. After a first half that went more the way of under bettors, 41 points were posted in the second half as the Packers offense finally woke up long enough to get into the endzone three times. A total of 65 were scored in the end.
After finally having a great start to an NFL Playoffs Sunday, sportsbooks lost a little of it back to players though the action was much more evenly distributed for the AFC Championship game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots.
Steelers vs. Patriots Spread
A small majority (52%) of bettors wagered on Tom Brady's squad covering the spread and returning to the big game for the seventh occasion under his tenure. The Patriots started quickly with a field goal on their first drive and then opened their aerial attack, even incorporating the infamous flea flicker play used many times in their historic 16-0 campaign, and covered with ease 36-17.
Steelers vs. Patriots Moneyline
A healthy percentage of bettors (63%) believed that Big Ben would lead his team to victory in Foxborough, but with Leveon Bill getting pulled early due to a groin injury, and the Pats essentially taking Antonio Brown out of game, the Steelers were too one-dimensional to have a chance and never seemed to be in the game.
Steelers vs. Patriots Total
With around 3:30 left in the game, the Steelers scored a garbage touchdown to bring the total over the necessary 50 points. There would be a total of 11 points scored in the closing quarter to push the total over by 3 points.
