Ravens vs Broncos set to begin NFL season

The 2013 NFL season kicks off on Thursday, September 5 at Mile High Stadium in Denver, Colorado. Defending champion Baltimore Ravens are installed as 7.5 point underdogs against the Denver Broncos. The total for the season opener is set at 48 points with -110 each way at most online sportsbooks.

In an unusual twist, Baltimore will not have the luxury of home-field advantage in the season opener, as scheduling conflicts with the Baltimore Orioles led to the game taking place in Mile High. NFL officials have in fact attempted to set the atmosphere by having giant posters of quarterback Joe Flacco and Ray Lewis appear in the stadium; leading to controversy and a media frenzy in what is otherwise a game with no bad blood to speak of.

Joe Flacco's huge contract extension with the Ravens - worth $120.6 million for six years - has obviously not been in enough to convince bettors to jump on the defending champion's bandwagon. Denver has the higher powered offense and more defensive pieces in place, and the pointspread has steadily remained over a TD since the opener (per SBR Odds).

Online sportsbook 5Dimes, who SBR recently covered in a 2013 sportsbook profile, is also spreading team total odds on each the Ravens and Broncos. For example, Baltimore's team total is listed at 21 points -105. If they score 21 points, no money changes hands and the bet is returned as a "push". If Baltimore scores 22 points or more, a bettor cashes. And finally, if the Ravens score 20 or less, the bettor loses. These exotic offerings can add value to players looking to clear through a sportsbook bonus rollover more quickly.
