Oscars Prop Betting Recap: Moonlight Upsets La La Land
The 89th Academy Awards was not without incident. In perhaps one of the most controversial finishes in recent memory, Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway announced "La La Land" as the winner of the best motion picture award.
There was no surprise with the announcement given that La La Land was a -700 to -1000 favorite for the night's most coveted trophy.
However, once the entire La La Land cast was on stage, it was discovered that in fact the winner for the award was "Moonlight", at which point the cast left the stage and the cast of Moonlight made their way to accept the honor.
The biggest winner in all of the confusion? The online sports bettors that wagered on Moonlight at the odds of +830, a better than eight to one payday. There was less drama in the best actor in a supporting role trophy to open the night which saw Moonlight's Mahershala Ali (great role in House of Cards) win as the -1200 betting chalk.
The night's other winners:
Casey Affleck beat Denzel out for the best actor in a leading role at -125. Affleck starred in Manchester by the Sea.
Emma Stone took home best actress as the -530 favorite for her work in La La Land.
Viola Davis was an overwhelming favorite at approximately -3000 for supporting actress for her role in Fences and won easily.
Damien Chazelle won for best director as a -1550 favorite for calling the shots of La La LAnd.
