Mayweather celebrates after defeating Miguel Cotto

Floyd “Money” Mayweather is a big favorite in his May 4th showdown with Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero. Mayweather has been installed as an 8/1 favorite at most online sportsbooks as well as in Las Vegas. This article lists everything you need to know from a handicapping perspective and lists the best available boxing betting odds by sportsbook.

Update: Price on Floyd Mayweather drops dramatically to -650 at 5Dimes Sportsbook

This bout marks the first time in Mayweather's professional career that he will not be fighting under the HBO banner. Mayweather signed an historic deal with Showtime worth up to $250 million. If Mayweather manages to step into the ring more frequently than we're accustomed to seeing he will easily remain Forbes' highest paid athlete.

Mayweather has never tasted defeat in his professional career, sporting a perfect 43-0 record. There is no blueprint on beating the brash American but there certainly is for fellow welterweight pugilist Robert Guerrero; he has lost and had one bout called even in a 33 fight career.

The build up to the fight seemed fairly standard. Mayweather the villain, playing his cards perfectly, marketing himself as the cocky undefeated prizefighter. An opponent looks to humble the champion. In this case it's Robert Guerrero, whose wife is a cancer survivor, and who mentions his faith as a driving force in each interview. It was Guerrero's faith that helped him through a terribly difficult time. Guerrero was saying all the right things headed into the biggest payday of his career.

Until he got arrested.

That's right, apparently in between playing the squeaky clean Mexican boxer-puncher here to knock Mayweather off his throne, a boxer eight months removed from prison, Guerrero forgot that he's not the heel. The 30-year old was arrested on March 28th for traveling with an unlicensed handgun at JFK airport in New York. Fortunately the fight was not called off, Guerrero must report back to New York for a May 14th court date.

Interestingly, Mayweather dropped from a 10/1 to 8/1 favorite at most online sportsbooks shortly after Guerrero's trip from PR hell.

Mayweather is coming off a crowd pleasing but sound win against Miguel Cotto. Boxing writers seemed to conclude that he's lost a step. This writer disagrees. Mayweather is smart enough to know that his time is almost up in the sport. He must continue to make exciting fights to keep his PPV numbers high in a sport that most casual fans seem more disenchanted with one controversial decision after the next.

While a fight with Manny Pacquaio may not be in the cards any longer, Floyd is still the biggest money making machine the sport has ever seen. A few weeks after his appearance during the CBS broadcast of the NCAA Final Four, he has a CBS documentary titled Mayweather airing April 27th at 8PM EST.

The corners of both fighters have generated almost as much discussion as the fighters themselves. Floyd Mayweather is being trained by his father - Floyd Sr - for the first time in several years, while Robert Guerrero is also being trained by his father, Ruben Guerrero. What's notable about Mayweather's sudden change in corner is the stark difference in his boxing mindset than his brother, Roger Mayweather, Floyd's previous trainer. Floyd Sr. believes his son has taken too much punishment in recent fights and has been tasked with tightening up his defense - after all, it was Floyd Sr. who taught little Floyd the shoulder roll when he was just five years old.

Even at 36 years of age, Mayweather should control the pace of the action with his ring generalship and frustrate Guerrero with his suffocating defense enough to coast to another easy victory. As the price on Mayweather straight-up is not overly attractive—such has been the case for many years given his dominance—there's a temptation to consider a bet on a win by way of knockout.

Mayweather will look to get off on the right foot with his new blockbuster Showtime deal and remind the world that he's still boxing's biggest and best star. Even without Larry Merchant there to troll him in the ring.

Pick: Mayweather by KO + Mayweather ML

Bets on Floyd Mayweather to defeat Mexican boxer Robert Guerrero by way of knockout, TKO, or DQ are now available at online sportsbooks. Pinnacle Sportsbook is offering nearly a 3 to 1 return for such a wager. Under the lights at the MGM Grand, which marks the biggest stage in Robert Guerrero's career, many including current boxers are favoring Floyd "Money" Mayweather to take carae of business against "The Ghost".
