Australian Open Upset Alert: Andy Murray Loses as 40 to 1 Favorite
Andy Murray was trading as a favorite of -4000 or 40 to 1 to advance in the round of 16 in the Australian Open.
Murray was also the odds on favorite at -110 to win the Aussie Open following an equally shocking upset which saw defending champion Novak Djokovic go down in flames as an -8000 favorite against Denis Istomin.
An SBR Sports Picks writer characterized Murray's chances in the event as follows after Djokovic's flash exit in the round of 64: "With Djokovic's defeat, Andy Murray is now the undeniable favorite to lift the trophy in Melbourne. After losing already five finals on this event, Murray has a golden opportunity to break that negative streak and claim his first Australian Open title."
It took just four sets for world number 50 Mischa Zverev to dispatch world number 1 Andy Murray. Murray committed six double faults compared to Zverev's two, and won just 36% of his second serve points. Murray previously practiced with Zverev earlier in his career before turning professional. Interestingly enough, Zverev's younger brother went five sets Friday in a losing effort against Rafael Nadal, though as a much more modestly priced 2.5 to 1 underdog.
With the elimination of Murray, old dog Roger Federer is priced shortest by Bet365 at +300 to taste victory in Melbourne. Stan Wawrinka and Milos Raonic are available at +350 each, whilst Rafael Nadal is on offer at +500.
SBR Forum poster navyblue81 asked whether or not tennis was about to enter a dark period given how the sport's most popular players are mostly past their prime. Meanwhile, SBR Forum poster wikkidinsane celebrated his winning moneyline wager on Zverev.
