News on scam sports betting operations, events and business deals within the offshore sports gambling industry.

Merger talks dominate the industry. Several A and A+ books involved.

01.10.2005
SBR has been directly notified by several major sportsbooks that they have signed confidentiality agreements and/or retained agents for private talks. SBR has been bearish on mergers and generally skeptical of previous possible combinations. However, for better or worse, it appears that 2005 will be the year that a major phase of consolidation will begin.

Operating under BetMidas.com, Royal Sports attempt at the credit side of the business is finally over. WorldWager (SBR rating F) refusing to pay bettor $14,400 claiming that he violated the ‘wiseguy’ rule. After losing over $16,000 with WorldWager since 2002, the player accumulated a balance of $16,900 in his account. His last payout was for $2,500 in October 04. He has been pleading with management for the remainder of his funds since.

OklahomaSportsBetting (SBR rating F+) and sister sportsbook SportsbettingLines (SBR rating F+) continue to use stall tactics when players request substantial withdrawals via FedEx. The latest slow-pay complaint comes from a Sportsbettinglines customer who has been waiting for a $3,000 check since late October. SBL has refused to offer a tracking number, yet has concluded that the check was stolen before it reached the player. The player has waited over two months for Sportsbettinglines to finish its “bank investigation” so that the funds can again be credited to his playing account.

Sportsinteraction (SBR rating D+) pays player who was slow-paid for three weeks (reported on 12/30/04). SIA blames the delay on an accounting oversight. SBR has recently upgraded SIA from D to D+ after new members of management showed a commitment to addressing player disputes. Some player frustrations are likely due to the fact that management resides in Ireland while the customer service center is located in Canada. Players are often frustrated communicating with clerks who give contradicting and wrong information. Players would notice an improved level of service if clerks interacted seamlessly with management. SIA states that they will soon be improving the way departments communicate.

Internet1x2 (SBR rating F) earns the most payout complaints in 2004. For most of the year, Internet1x2 was competing with ESB (SBR rating F-) for the title of the largest active scam-sportsbook. In November SBR upgraded 1x2 to F in order to reflect the possibility of payment. Many players were paid in full while others received small payments. 1x2 is now back to their old ways as new no-pay complaints emerge with players reporting broken promises of payment. SBR will continue to warn players of these books in 2005.

SBR will open an anti-scam investigative office in Costa Rica in February. A major SBR initiative in 2005 will be helping problem players by working with Gamblers Anonymous. Dire warnings of many sportsbooks failing in 2004 prove false.

12.31.2004
The last major warning by SBR was in late 2003 just before the collapse of 3 Costa Rican sportsbooks. In 2004 industry insiders took their cue from poor performances by sportsbooks and translated that into impending doom. It was certainly a great year for the players and many books have been badly weakened. However, the industry as a whole has a reduced cost structure thanks in a large part to the US government strangling out mass advertising. The biggest operational cost savings for the sportsbooks was the continued mass migration from phone to the internet for placing bets.

As 2004 gives way to the New year, SBR takes a look back: The self proclaimed

best sportsbook in the world; BoDog (SBR rating A-), lightened things up with a publicity stunt of the like the industry had never seen before. The BoDog CEO, Cole Turner, staged a kidnapping in the jungles of Asia by a Kung-fu homosexual rebel tribe. Industry insiders are still scratching their head over that unusal publicity stunt. On a more serious note, the opening of Hail Mary Sportsbook is a "Must See" look back.

Player reports two week slow-pay from SportsInteraction (SBR rating D+) as well as a horrible customer service experience. SBR has contacted management today, who stated that a Neteller transaction is now being processed.
"I made a withdrawal on Tuesday Dec. 14th and Thursday Dec. 16th, to my Neteller and haven’t received anything. I have been given every excuse in the book, from "It takes 4 day waiting period before we process withdrawals" - They told me this one 6 business days after my initial request. They also told me "Due to holidays, there are delays in accounting", and the last excuse they gave me was "Your account has been sent to the fraud department for review". Then a couple hours later on Thursday December 23rd, I was told they have been approved but will take another 24-48 hours to process then another 4 days to hit my Neteller. This has been the worst experience ever with a sportsbook and my last time with this book."

SBR Bill Dozer reports: PlaceMyBet (SBR rating C-) gives player the ‘Bait and Switch’ Bonus?

12.27.2004
"I have been playing at Placemybet.com for about 8 months (acct # XXXXXXXXX) and recently referred George XXXXX (acct # XXXXXXXXX,) a friend of mine.  I told him that I received a bonus of 25% and he might get the same.  He called them to open an account and they told him that the norm was a 25% bonus only for deposits completed online, but since he wanted to open with $10,000, they could only do so by telephone and would make an exception and give him the 25% anyway.  He confirmed the 25% for his telephone deposit on three separate occasions, but after he deposited the funds, only a 10% bonus was placed in his account.  When he called to complain the manager said that he would review the phone calls and let him know.  He called later and the manager told him that he listened to the tapes and, despite the fact that three different people told George that he would receive the 25% for the telephone deposit, that was not their policy and they would not honor that promise (so why did they even listen to the calls?).  I also called as the person who had referred George and a woman told me that they would lose their gambling license if they gave him more than is stated on the website for a phone deposit (ironically, they gave me 25% on a phone deposit in April when their site said the same thing it says now). George finally buckled and accepted the 10% bonus because he wanted to start betting his account.  Needless to say, my friend George was upset with me for sending him there."
