One of the most crucial matchups to begin the week takes place in Philadelphia, and we have a free MLB pick for Tuesday’s tilt between the Dodgers and Phillies.

Assuming rain doesn’t cancel Monday’s game in Philadelphia between the Phillies and Los Angeles Dodgers, Tuesday’s tilt in front of the MLB Network cameras will be game No. 2,101 in the rivalry. The forecast calls for an 80%-90% chance of rain in the Philly area the next few days, and that will factor into the baseball odds when they’re released for each contest in the 3-game set, the Dodgers’ only scheduled visit to Citizens Bank Park in 2018.

Behind All-Star Aaron Nola (12-3, 2.30), the Phils are slightly chalked in the middle game of the series. Los Angeles counters with Kenta Maeda (7-5, 3.12), the total expected to land in the 7½-8 run range.

Dodgers Outscore Brewers 19-10 In Machado’s First 3 Games

Already blessed with a roster laden with stars, much of the current focus on the Dodgers has to do with the newest addition to the lineup, Manny Machado. Los Angeles acquired the All-Star in a trade with Baltimore last week, and Machado made himself right at home in the 2-hole of the order over the weekend in Milwaukee going 5-for-13 in his first three games. Philadelphia’s Odubel Herrera also got his second half started well with five hits in 12 at bats – including his team-leading 17th HR – as the Phillies took two of three from San Diego.

Maeda has been one tough nut to crack since mid-May, the right-hander sporting a sub-2.00 ERA over his last 50.2 innings with LA 6-3 in his last nine starts. His worst outing during the stretch came against these Phils, Maeda forced from the mound in the second due to a strained hip after surrendering a couple of runs. Nola was marvelous in an upset of Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers in LA on May 31, the LSU alum tossing 2-hit, 1-run baseball through seven in the 2-1 final. Bookmaker closed the Phils +147, one of only four times in 20 starts Nola wasn’t favored. ‘Under’ bettors have returned to the pay window in his last five assignments.

Series Trends & A Free Pick

Nola’s victory over the Dodgers – Seranthony Dominguez closing it with a 6-out save – guaranteed a split in that series, and that’s pretty much how things have gone between the two teams at CBP over the years. The teams have split the last 10 matchups thanks to the Phils taking three of four at home last season, half going ‘over’ along with three pushes.

The weather is a bit disconcerting, especially after the Phils were forced to postpone one of the weekend games against San Diego. As long as Nola and Maeda don’t have their outings cut short by rain, I like the ‘under’ for my free MLB pick.
