Ciryl Gane

Introduction, Background and UFC Career

Ciryl Gane has a small professional MMA record of 8-0 (5-0 in the UFC) but he's a familiar name for Muay Thai fans. A former champion in that discipline, the French went a perfect 7-0 in Muay Thai before transitioning into MMA and he's used to competing at the highest level throughout his career.

A former TKO heavyweight champion, Gane has six wins by either KO/TKO or submission in his career. Tanner Boser at UFC Fight Night 165 on December 21st, 2019 and Jairzinho Rozenstruik at UFC Vegas 20 on February 27th are the only fighters able to take Gane to the judge's scorecards. Gane won a unanimous decision against Rozenstruik in his last fight.

Alexander Volkov

Introduction, Background and UFC Career

Alexander Volkov is a former M-1 Global and Bellator heavyweight champion from Moscow, Russia. A professional since 2009, Volkov comes to this fight with plenty of experience and a decent 6-1 record since joining the UFC in 2016. Volkov has a Tsu Shin Gen background that helps him use diverse striking techniques that not many heavyweight fighters know.

Volkov also has a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu brown belt but his three wins by submission tell us that he doesn’t use those skills much during his matches. He has been working on his wrestling though and he has won three of his last four fights (two via TKO). 'Drago' is coming off a second-round TKO win against Alistair Overeem at UFC Vegas 18 on February 6th.

  • Height: 6’7″
  • Weight: 240 lbs
  • Reach: 80″
  • Stance: Orthodox
  • Association: Strela Team
  • Class: Heavyweight
  • Record: 33-8

Method of VictorySignificant StrikesTakedowns
22 wins by KO/TKO4.88 Landed70% Accuracy
3 wins by Submission2.48 Absorbed66% Defended
8 wins by Decision

Octagon Strengths

  • Experience
  • Dangerous with kicks
  • Excellent Footwork
  • Has stopped his last two opponents

Octagon Weaknesses

  • Defense against a potent grappling offense
  • His chin is not bulletproof

Ciryl Gane usually stays on the outside and relies on his Muay Thai offense, gauging his range with an inside leg kick and landing multiple combinations. He likes to switch stances and move constantly while exchanging strikes. Volkov is taller but this game plan can work because Gane holds a reach advantage. 'Bon Gamin' also has a decent ground game, with three of his six career stoppages coming via submission but that route will be tough against Volkov, who has a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Volkov has had some trouble against knockout artists and strong grapplers like Gane. Can he handle the skill level of someone with Gane's size and reach? A grappling war favors Gane but this is a tough fight to read, Volkov has more experience but can he solve Gane and overcome his strength and skills? I personally can't see it!
