Max Holloway vs. Calvin Kattar

UFC Featherweight Bout

Saturday, January 16th, 2021 – 6:05 PM at UFC Apex Center

Max Holloway (21-6-0)

'Holloway', one of the most memorable and dominant names in the UFC featherweight division, and for a good reason. X2 dominant wins over legend Jose Aldo, a championship gold, and a thirteen-fight win streak inside the UFC leaves the 'Blessed' one as a future legend.

Born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, Holloway became familiar with the art of kickboxing during his teenage years. This path would eventually lead him to mixed martial arts, and the rest is history. The UFC handed Holloway his first contract at the tender age of nineteen, and he was the youngest fighter in the company's history.

Holloway has grown up in the world's most dominant and talented prosperous martial arts organization. It's no surprise that he was able to capture gold given the experience he has undergone.

Calvin Kattar (22-4-0)

Calvin Kattar hasn't had the fame and glory like his opponent this weekend, but the high-level performances and unforgettable fights have been more than present throughout Kattar's UFC tenure.

Kattar began his life in combat sports on the wrestling mats, and before heading to college, he was ranked in the top ten of his home-state of Massachusetts. However, the decision to move towards martial arts was evidently the correct move as Kattar is now one win short of a championship opportunity.

The UFC featherweight division is a dangerous one. Still, a significant win over the #1 ranked Max Holloway will boost the stock of Kattar – #2 ranked Brian Ortega has already suffered defeat to Holloway, making a victory for Kattar even more notable.

How Can Holloway Win?

Max Holloway can feed off the chaos and could be the worst opponent to get into a dog fight with. We usually witness Max struggle in the octagon when two components are brought to the table; leg kicks combined with fast movement – Alexander Volkanovski has the blueprint for that one.

It's no secret that Holloway progresses during his fights the longer it lasts, countless round one's in Max's fight history he's either lost or drawn. Luckily for Max, Kattar offers a similar start to his fights and will not pose a dangerous threat early on.

Boxing, it's that simple. I don't think we're going to witness an array of martial arts techniques; we're going to see Max excel with his offensive striking.

How Can Kattar Win?

In Max's prior losses, he was given no opportunity to rest, Volkanovski was constant with his attack leaving the former champion little time to evolve during the fight. If Kattar can approach the early rounds with a copied method, avoid Holloway's flurries, and utilize some leg work, he'll have a chance.

Holloway steps-into the pocket with combinations frequently during later rounds. Perhaps Kattar will have his elbow on ice ready to shatter another skull as he did to Jeremy Stephens.

Holloway vs. Kattar Betting Odds Advice

The sportsbooks' current odds are slightly leaning towards the former champion in Holloway, and the current value is something we cannot give up. The -158 available odds should be closer to -200, in my opinion, and do not be surprised if they have entirely drifted by fight night.

Holloway will be one step ahead of Kattar, and with my UFC picks, I expect a striking chess game between the two but one that Holloway can checkmate.
