Ciryl Gane vs. Alexander Volkov
UFC Heavyweight Main Event Bout
Saturday, June 26, 2021 – 11:55 PM EDT at Apex Center
Ciryl Gane (8-0)
Watching Ciryl Gane inside an MMA octagon with a mere three year's experience is quite impressive. Still, if you're familiar with the sport of Muay Thai, you will be aware that his martial arts experience stems further than the UFC octagon.
Gane is a former Muay Thai world champion and has trained at the highest level for over a decade. When the technical well-versed fighter you see inside a UFC cage puts on a display, this back information will hopefully assist your understanding.
Before he transitioned to MMA, Gane went a perfect 7-0 in Muay Thai before capturing Muay Thai gold. He has yet to taste defeat in professional competition and continues to prove his high-level skills under the UFC banner.
Ciryl Gane MMA Accomplishments
- UFC Performance of the Night (One time)
- TKO Heavyweight Champion (One time)
Alexander Volkov (33-8-0)
The nation of Russia has made its presence felt in the UFC in recent years; Petr Yan & Khabib Nurmagomedov have flown the flag with gold around their waists. But the UFC's heavyweight division has yet to provide a Russian star, that was until Alexander Volkov went on a 6-2 run while dominating guys like Fabricio Werdum, Greg Hardy & Walt Harris.
Volkov is creeping up on the top five heavyweight rankings, and with a professional career as long as the opposition, confidence should be considerably high. Former heavyweight champion for M-1 & Bellator organisations, Volkov has shown no-mercy by utilising his karate/kickboxing background.
Volkov MMA Accomplishments
- UFC Fight of the Night (One time)
- UFC Performance of the Night (Two times)
- Bellator Heavyweight World Champion (One time)
- M-1 Global Heavyweight Championship (One time)
UFC in Vegas 30: Gane vs. Volkov Early Prediction
How Can Gane Win?
Gane prefers to stay on the outside and utilise his high-level technical offence from that Muay Thai background; he often holds a reach advantage, and although Volkov is the taller fighter, he’ll still own a two-inch reach advantage next weekend. Gane likes to throw an inside leg kick to gauge his range, land multiple combinations, switch stances and present constant movement whilst exchanging strikes.
His ground game is also worth highlighting; three of his six career stoppages were by way of submission. Something that Gane could surprise us with this weekend; however, the Brazilian jiu-jitsu brown belt in Volkov isn’t accepting of submission holds like some of Gane’s past opponents.
How Can Volkov Win?
We can’t deny that Volkov has struggled with knockout artists and strong grapplers, two attributes that we can certainly give credit to Gane for. With that said, Gane doesn’t pressure with knockout or takedown attempts.
Keeping his opponent at range and owning the size advantage is usually an essential trait for Volkov; attacking the base with leg kicks and mixing up his kickboxing is typically the plan, but it’ll be interesting to see how he handles the skill level and equal size of Gane. In a grappling war, I’d have to favour Gane through both strength and skill attributes.
Ciryl Gane vs. Alexander Volkov Prediction
The available odds at Sportsbook Review favour Gane, but they still appear cautious, in my opinion. Gauging a complete read on this fight is difficult, but the rise of Gane has shown few mistakes. The MMA experience of Volkov should be his best weapon, but I still believe the Frenchman has more tools at his disposal.
