Curtis Blaydes vs. Derrick Lewis
Saturday, November 28, 2020 – 09:35 PM EST at the UFC Apex
Curtis Blaydes (14-2-0)
There is no doubt in my mind; If Curtis Blaydes competed in the heavyweight division without Francis Ngannou on the roster, he'd be competing for the heavyweight championship or better yet, strutting around with belt on his waist. Unfortunately, a kryptonite in the shape of Francis Ngannou has stalled the young heavyweight's aspirations.
Besides this, his record remains unblemished with great thanks to his high-level wrestling offence. Blaydes senior year in wrestling finished with a 44-0 record, he took the skills to a championship level in college and later retired to martial arts. The correct choice was made, as Blaydes is competing at the highest level and doing it well.
It only took five professional fights and five knockouts before the UFC came knocking on Blaydes door, four years later and he's compiled a 9-2 record. Taking his third fight of the year, after securing big-name wins over Alexander Volkov and Junior Dos Santos, Blaydes is now targeting 'The Black Beast'.
Derrick Lewis (24-7-0)
There isn't much introduction needed for 'The Black Beast', through thirty-one professional MMA contests Mr. Lewis has won nineteen of those by knockout. Possessing some of the most dangerous knockout power on the entire UFC roster, Lewis made his name knocking other men out for a living.
Born and raised in 'The Big Easy', life in New Orleans wasn't so easy. Lewis had started boxing at a young age but a life a crime followed him early on. He found martial arts after a lengthy prison sentence, and the rest is history.
The majority of Lewis's career has been spent fighting under the UFC banner, and the thirty-five-year-old soul taker has been knocking out some of the most elite heavyweights the world has had to offer – and continues to do so.

How Can Blaydes Win?
The athleticism of Blaydes is a considerable advantage, and he's going to hold a speed, agility, size and age advantage against the legend Derrick Lewis. He knows that Lewis weaknesses have involved grappling, and a heavy-based wrestling strategy could tire the beast out to the point where Blaydes could even get a TKO stoppage.
How Can Lewis Win?
As we're presented with a classic 'striker versus grappler' matchup, it can be easy to favour the striking as all fights begin standing – and that's precisely where Derrick Lewis will aim to keep this fight.
The plan is simple for Lewis, or is it? Lewis has been working on his Jiu-Jitsu for a significant time and recently collected his blue belt. The man most known for his knockout finishes could perhaps evolve his game late on into his career. He's more than aware of Blaydes wrestling credentials, perhaps 'The Black Beast' has some tools in his back pocket.
In reality, the game plan for Lewis is to keep this fight standing and finish the job as soon as possible. He'll enter this fight with two advantages, his boxing offense
Blaydes vs. Lewis Betting Odds Advice
The bookmaker's current UFC odds are heavily favored towards Blaydes, and given the style of matchup, it's no surprise.
I agree with the oddsmakers and side with Blaydes for my UFC picks. As the number #2 and #4, ranked heavyweights clash for twenty-five minutes, It's hard to envision Derrick Lewis maintaining the pace of Blaydes. It might not happen instantly, but the wrestling skillset of Blaydes will play out and possibly lead him technical stoppage.
