Colby Covington (15-2-0)

From an NCAA Division-1 stand out to the most hated champion in UFC history, the MAGA-hat wearing provocative Colby Covington will make his first return to the octagon since losing the welterweight title matchup versus Kamaru Usman. But can the former interim titleholder defend his “country’s honor” against the former champion Tyron Woodley?

Born and raised in Clovis, California, Covington was top of the pack in his high-school and college wrestling days. A real standout on the mats, he would transition to MMA and find his new full-time career. A long undefeated streak in the UFC led Covington into a titleholder, and he’s currently the 2nd best-ranked welterweight on the planet.

It’ll be interesting to see if Covington’s game plan makes an impact since his departure from American Top Team. Covington still resides in Florida, but he’s currently training out of MMA Masters alongside the likes of UFC legend Ricardo Lamas.

Tyron Woodley (19-5-1)

Former UFC welterweight champion, rapper, TMZ personality amongst many other talents, Tyron Woodley, will finally face the big-mouthed Colby Covington that was calling his name out from when he was the champion. Losing the title to Kamaru Usman shattered Woodley’s chances of getting his hands on Covington but now the time has come.

Born and raised in Missouri, USA, during his younger years Woodley excelled on the wrestling mats much like his opponent this weekend. For close to a decade Woodley has been utilizing his brute strength and knockout power, but can the thirty-seven year old get back on track after his recent losing streak and decline in the ranking system.

The implications of this fight seem to be more significant for ‘The Chosen One’; another loss could place him outside of the top 10 rankings for the first time since 2014.

UFC in Vegas 11: Covington vs. Woodley Early Prediction

How Can Woodley Win?

The road for Woodley hasn’t been an easy route; the former champion is arguably facing the top three welterweights on the planet, back to back! Kamaru Usman took Woodley’s title, Gilbert Burn’s earned his stripes defeating Woodley, and now Covington is looking to use him as a bounce back.

More often than not, when two wrestler’s face-off they’ll resort to a striking battle but for Woodley to find success, I believe he’ll need to win the early rounds by using his strength. He does have the power to knock Covington out, but we’ve already witnessed the durability he possesses, and it wouldn’t be worth Woodley taking the risk.

It’s hard for anyone to keep up with the cardio of Covington; Woodley needs to take the early rounds in the judge’s eyes to stand a chance of winning this contest.

How Can Covington Win?

All the momentum and variables seem to favor Covington. But it’s also hard to completely discredit Woodley. Covington can win the striking war with his speed and movement, instead of using his wrestling offense to win the fight, he should keep it in the back pocket for defense and focus on out striking Woodley.

Clinch exchanges could tire Woodley, and in my opinion, cardio is the dictator of the fight ahead. If Colby can secure at least one of the first three rounds, I see no-way that Woodley can out-point him in the championship rounds.

Who Will Win?

Woodley’s right hand is very readable, but it’s still a dangerous tool. If Colby can evade Woodley’s powerful right and ignore any faints come from the left to set it up, the younger faster fighter in Covington should take it on the judge’s scorecards.

With that said Woodley is training with Jorge Masvidal at Covington’s former gym (American Top Team), who better than to figure out the blueprint of Covington than his former friend and training partner.

Covington vs. Woodley Betting Odds Advice

Some of the best sportsbooks opened Covington as a -250 favorite, and the public followed fashion by juicing the line into the -300’s. Although I believe Covington should take a unanimous decision, the danger of doubting Woodley isn’t worth the -320 price tag. Use Colby as a parlay addition or take a look at the over 3.5 rounds.
