Darren Till vs. Robert Whittaker
Saturday, July 25, 2020 – 11:55 PM EDT at UFC Fight Island
It's that time of the week again, where we focus on the main event of next weekend's UFC headliner. The massive success of UFC Fight Island has been a joy for fans, ending with a huge main event with an exciting middleweight clash between former welterweight title challenger Darren Till & former middleweight champion Robert Whittaker.
Darren Till (18-2-1)
With an 18-2-1 professional career record (7-2 UFC), Darren Till has been on a professional path of destruction winning seventeen consecutive fights besides a draw to Nicolas Dalby. He soon landed himself a title shot against Tyron Woodley who dished out Tills first loss by way of submission. A second loss to Jorge Masvidal sent Till to the middleweight division where he wouldn’t have to worry about his weight-cutting issues.
Hailing from the city of Liverpool, Till began training in Muay Thai at age 12 later turning professional at the tender age of 15. He spent the majority of his young career in Brazil where he was a part of the 'Astra Fight Team'. Before his UFC stint, In 2013 Darren fought eight times alone! And his record was 12-0 with seven knockouts' before joining the UFC roster.
I think Till was thrown into title contention way too early, he was out with a shoulder injury between 2015-2017 and on his return only had to win four straight fights to get himself a shot at the gold. Taking a closer look at his record, he only has a handful of notable wins, and when the UFC was giving him opponents like Jessin Ayari, they were handing him the victory here.
Without coming across like I'm scrutinizing Darren Till's win record, he was gifted the title shot and is in the position he's in down to his pure fighting talent. A mean southpaw stood with a Muay Thai stance, Darren is one of the best strikers in the middleweight division and aged 27, has more than enough time to sharpen his tools and become one of the best in the world.
Till vs. Whittaker Odds
The bookmakers seem in doubt, and you can't blame them. The opening line for Till was set at +115 making him a small betting underdog (Till) has now moved close to "
Robert Whittaker (20-5-0)
Born in New-Zealand but raised and fighting out of Australia is Robert 'Bobby Knuckles' Whittaker. Whittaker is the former UFC Middleweight Champion who remained undefeated in nine fights. He's won three' performance of the night' bonuses against Brad Tavares, Derek Brunson & Jacare Souza. 'Fight of the Night' bonus four times against Clint Hester, Derek Brunson and Yoel Romero twice. He was the winner of The Ultimate Fighter Welterweight tournament and Australia's first UFC champion. Amongst countless other achievements, the respect Whittaker has earnt in the sport is unambiguous.
A former Australian wrestling champion, if it wasn't for his UFC commitments, then Whittaker could've wrestled at a high level if he wanted too. He even turned away the opportunity to represent Australia in the Olympics. MMA became his essential choice and in 2012 he made his professional UFC debut in the finale of 'The Ultimate Fighter: The Smashes', which pitted a group of fighters from the United Kingdom and Australia, compete for a contract in the UFC. Whittaker won the tournament and never looked back; the undefeated streak continued to remain active up until Israel Adesanya handed Whittaker his first loss in five long years.
UFC Fight Night: Till vs. Whittaker Early Prediction & Betting Pick
How can Whittaker win the Fight?
Pressure Darren Till into uncomfortable situations, allowing Till to find his range and flow will give him the highest probability of landing those lethal strikes.
We haven't seen Whittaker utilize his wrestling offense, and if he struggles on the feet, it might be a good idea to fall back on said wrestling.
How can Till win the Fight?
Relax Darren, over-confidence mixed with a dose of anxiety is the reason I believe Till lost himself the Fight versus Jorge Masvidal. But now, without the weight worries, and a win over Kelvin Gastelum behind him - he could show some promise in the middleweight division.
Who will win the Fight?
I'd much prefer to have odds sitting at around +140 for Till, but as an English lad, I'd be a fool to fade our home-town hero.
Bias aside, the questions looming over the current state of Robert
