Marvin Vettori

Introduction, Background and UFC Career

Born and raised in Trento, Italy, Marvin Vettori found martial arts as a teenager as he watched the UFC on cable television. He was determined to make it in MMA, so he went to around five gyms to learn the skills needed to thrive in the sport. Vettori eventually settled in Huntington Beach, California and his hard work, toughness and skill are unmatched.

His 6-2-1 record in under four years with the UFC suggests that he might be a bit overlooked. After all, he suffered a very close split decision loss against Israel Adesanya at UFC on FOX 29 on April 14th, 2018 and followed it up with four straight wins. Vettori's last win came against Jack Hermansson via unanimous decision at UFC on ESPN 19 on December 5th.

Kevin Holland

Introduction, Background and UFC Career

Kevin Holland was born in Riverside, California. He was raised in Rancho Cucamonga and Ontario and started his martial arts training at 16 years old. Holland was inspired by his hero Georges St-Pierre after watching him for the first time at UFC 100. After going 5–0 as an amateur MMA fighter, Holland became a pro in 2015 and fought at promotions like Xtreme Knockout, Legacy Fighting Championship, King of the Cage, Bellator MMA and Legacy Fighting Alliance. Holland compiled a 12–3 record before signing with the UFC in 2018. He is 8-3 in the UFC, with wins against John Phillips, Gerald Meerschaert, Anthony Hernandez, Darren Stewart, Charlie Ontiveros and Ronaldo Souza.

"Trailblazer" Holland has won five of his last six fights (four by KO or TKO). He submitted Charlie Ontiveros in the first round at UFC Fight Night 181 on October 31st and he stopped Ronaldo Souza in the first round at UFC 256 on December 12th. In his last fight, he suffered a tough unanimous decision loss against Derek Brunson at UFC Fight Night: Brunson vs. Holland on March 20th, which snapped his five-fight win streak.

  • Solid Muay Thai base
  • Has won his last five of his last six fights

Octagon Weaknesses

  • Can be hit on the counter

Holland is used to quick turnarounds. He's competed a whopping six times from May 2020 to March 2021, going 5-1 and ending Vettori's momentum could help him get back on track. If Vettori wins, he will likely get into the Top 5, which could set up at least a title eliminator fight. There's a lot at stake for both fighters.

That said, Vettori is not the kind of opponent anyone wants to fight on short notice. Derek Brunson exposed holes in Holland's skillset. Brunson dominated Holland on the ground, taking him down with ease and Vettori is a far superior grappler. Brunson gassed out quickly against Holland but Vettori has better cardio, which is another issue for Holland. After all, he just fought three weeks ago, he might struggle if the bout goes to the later rounds.

Holland has the reach and striking advantage against Vettori but he had those edges over Brunson and he got outclassed. Styles make fights and this is just not a good matchup for Holland. Don't get me wrong, he can put up a fight against anyone but he has to improve his takedown defense and ground game to overcome Vettori. Holland's only path to victory is by early knockout but Vettori can do some serious damage on the ground as the fight progresses.
