Paul Felder

Introduction, Background and UFC Career

A report from ESPN revealed that Paul Felder decided to step in on five days' notice to fight Rafael dos Anjos. The former UFC lightweight champion was going to face Islam Makhachev before a staph infection forced him out of the event. Rafael dos Anjos wanted Michael Chandler to step in but he declined and the UFC chose Felder, who last fought on February 23rd when he lost an epic fight against Dan Hooker at UFC Fight Night 168. "The Irish Dragon" teased retirement after that tough setback against Hooker but he ultimately opted to remain an active fighter. Facing dos Anjos is a great opportunity for him and if anyone can make the most of it it's him.

Felder attended Ridley High School and the University of the Arts, graduating in 2008 with a degree in acting. Before that, he began training martial arts when he was 12 years old, learning Tae Kwon Do and Karate at Zhang Sah. Felder event competed in the Junior Olympics for Tae Kwon Do with his cousin Niko Portillo. He debuted in the UFC with a split decision win against Jason Saggo at UFC Fight Night 54 on October 4th, 2014 and he was coming off victories against James Vick and Edson Barboza before the tough split decision loss against Hooker.

Rafael dos Anjos

Introduction, Background and UFC Career

Rafael dos Anjos got into fights in his hometown Niterói in Rio de Janeiro but at age nine he started training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Daniel Matheus and stopped fighting on the streets. The 36-year-old veteran has gone to war against many of the very best names in mixed martial arts since joining the UFC in 2008. Jeremy Stephens, Clay Guida, Donald Cerrone, Khabib Nurmagomedov, Nate Diaz, Anthony Pettis, Eddie Alvarez, Tony Ferguson, Neil Magny, Robbie Lawler, Colby Covington and Kamaru Usman have all faced dos Anjos.

Those are some of the fights that shaped him as a competitor and he's beaten Donald Cerrone twice, Nate Diaz, Anthony Pettis and Robbie Lawler, to name a few, although he's lost four of his last five fights, including his most recent one against Michael Chiesa via unanimous decision at UFC Fight Night 166 on January 25th.

The UFC odds favor dos Anjos and it's understandable, he has more experience than his opponent and he's ready to go to war while Felder wasn't planning on fighting this Saturday. Felder is one of the toughest, most competitive and entertaining fighters in the UFC and I love his chances, even on short notice. He is a fantastic striker who has demonstrated his ability to be comfortable wherever the fight takes place and he has nothing to lose.
