Saturday, July 25, 2020 – 11:35 PM EDT live on ESPN+ from Fight Island in Abu Dhabi
UFC on "Fight Island" in Abu Dhabi has sure lived up to the spectacle it was set to be, an action-packed month-long streak of back to back events. The UFC has reached its final week on the beautiful Yas Island and will leave us in style.
In the co-main event of the evening, light heavyweight legends Mauricio Rua and Antonio Nogueira will complete their trilogy bout.
Plenty of betting lines and markets are currently available; let's attempt to find some value in this weekend's UFC Fight Night on Fight Island co-main event.
Mauricio 'Shogun' Rua
Introduction, background & UFC career
Former UFC light heavyweight champion and familiar name with UFC diehards, 'Shogun' Rua, remains competing at the highest level – and with the best five-fight record since the mid-2000s (4-1) doesn't seem to be slowing down anytime soon.
Born and raised in Curitiba, Brazil, it all began on the jiu-jitsu mats for Rua. Aged seven he began Muay-Thai which combined with the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, led him into a life of martial arts. His experience and surroundings in Chute Box stemmed a rivalry against Brazilian Top Team gym, and here we are fifteen years later, repeating the same fight for the third time – historic.
Now competing at the highest level of the sport, Rua first met Nogueira at Pride FC in 2005 – their rivalry continued into the UFC when their second fight took place ten years later. Rua collected two decisions wins as both men were awarded fight of the night honors. The difference between the two, Rua picked up UFC gold during his prime years and is now a handful of matches away from gaining severe contention.
- Possesses a 2-0 lead heading into the trilogy.
- Former Champion.
- Younger fighter of the two.
- Was rocked in the first round of the second fight.
- Aging fighter
Antonio 'Minotouro' Rogerio Nogueira
Introduction, background & UFC career
A legend in the mixed martial arts world, the Nogueira brothers have cemented their name into the history books – but as "Lil-Nog" prepares for his trilogy bout with 'Shogun' Rua does he still have what it takes to give a fight of the night worthy performance.
The Brazilian born former Pride FC fan favorite and current UFC gatekeeper has fought all the champions but never held gold, not to say he hasn't tried.
Nogueira hasn't been as active in recent years and has suffered more knockouts in the past four years than his entire nineteen-year career. With that said, 'Lil Nog' should never be counted out and could most certainly provide us with a third memorable contest between himself and 'Shogun' Rua.
- He's had moments of success during the two previous bouts.
- Durability has declined.
- He is coming off a round one knockout.
UFC odds & betting thoughts
A legendary rivalry will finally reach its demise this weekend and with history pointing towards a 'fight of the night' worthy performance – don't be surprised if we see these two staples of the UFC give us a repeat performance.
With a repeat performance, I expect calm and calculated 'Shogun' Rua we saw in their second encounter. Up until Nogueira rocked him, Rua maintained complete composure - impressive performance across fifteen minutes bar the first-round scare.
Rua managed to effortlessly takedown Nogueira on two occasions, and he didn't attempt many takedowns. Still, there's a good chance he could present a new game-plan for the declining 'Lil-Nog'.
The current UFC odds available hold great value, in my opinion, the younger fighter who's been more active and holds two wins over the same opponent; I'll take -180 odds on that. Sportsbook Review is keeping track of all the latest odds, so be sure to find the best value for your money at SBROdds.
