Chris Weidman vs. Omari Akhmedov

UFC Light Heavyweight bout

Saturday, August 08, 2020 – 11:35 PM EDT live on ESPN+ from the UFC Apex Centre in Las Vegas, Nevada

The UFC isn't leaving a weekend open for us to breathe during this summer, as we're back again with yet another Fight Night aka UFC in Vegas event.

In the co-main event of the evening, former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman will go face to face with the dangerous Russian Sambo champion Omari Akhmedov.

Plenty of betting lines and markets are currently available; let's attempt to find some value in this weekend's UFC Fight Night co-main event.

Introduction, Background & UFC Career

Former UFC middleweight champion, NCAA Division I champion and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, Chris Weidman, will make his eagerly awaited return to MMA action. An ambassador for mixed martial arts, besides countless wins over some of the greatest athletes in the sport – Weidman helped bring legalization of MMA to the state of New York.

Born and raised in Baldwin, New York, Weidman's love for combat sport began on the wrestling mats from an early age. A complete stud to his peers, he went on to earn All-American credentials twice. From wrestling to jiu-jitsu, Weidman bonded with, now long-term coach Matt Serra to work on his BJJ game.

After a dominant five year run in the UFC, Weidman has suffered a concerning amount of knockout losses in recent times but continues to strive, aged 36. His track record speaks for itself, as Weidman has played a considerable role in the sport of MMA and looks to find himself in the win column this weekend.

Octagon strengths

  • Former Middleweight Champion.
  • BJJ black belt.
  • All American NCAA Division I Champion.
  • Finishing ability from all areas of the game.

Octagon weaknesses

  • Can sometimes lack aggression.
  • Susceptible to takedowns.

Introduction, Background & UFC Career

International Master of Sports in Sambo & hand-to-hand combat, Omari Akhmedov, will be head-hunting for the most significant win of his career. The dangerous Russian athlete has remained undefeated since his move up to the middleweight division and could land himself a top-ten ranking with a win over Chris Weidman.

The Russian born Sambo champion has been distant from the octagon this year, but after a 3-0 run in 2019, I have no doubt Omari has remained in shape and opportunistic in his fight choice.

The Sambo champion going toe-to-toe with the Division I wrestler gets my excitement meter up there, I anticipate a test of will when these two clinch up, and we're guaranteed to see some ultra-high level grappling on display.

Octagon strengths

  • BJJ black belt (2nd dan).
  • International Master of Sports across multiple disciplines.
  • He is riding a 3-fight win streak.

Octagon weaknesses

  • Often losses cardio heading into the third round.
  • First championship-caliber opponent.

UFC Odds & Betting Thoughts

At this point in Chris Weidman's career, there are huge concerns regarding his ability to take a punch, from his previous six matchups he's lost five of those via knockout. I'm not sure if the Longo/Serra team know something we don't, but I'm doubtful the durability of Weidman exists any longer.

The grappling matchup between these two fighters is intriguing, as both Weidman and Omari have attempted to grapple at least once in nearly all of their UFC bouts. Will their equal high-level of grappling be cancelled out, on this occasion I don't believe it will.

I'm liking Akhmedov to win at +105 with BetOnline (visit our BetOnline Review) because I anticipate Omari might want to slow the hand-speed of Weidman early and test his grappling power against the division I wrestling stand-out. Throwing everything into his shots, it doesn't take much to rock the equilibrium of Weidman, and I wouldn't be surprised if Omari added himself to the list of middleweight's who have rattled the former champion.
