The Ultimate Fighting Championship returns to action as we have the female flyweight action in the co-main event of the evening. UFC Odds are live for the event, here’s a complete UFC betting preview featuring Joanne Calderwood and Jennifer Maia, including updated odds and our betting pick.

Joanne Calderwood vs. Jennifer Maia

Saturday, August 01, 2020 – 10:35 PM EDT at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas

UFC on "Fight Island" in Abu Dhabi has been pure entertainment from start to finish, but just because the Island festivities have ended doesn't mean the show has. Fight Night returns to the Apex Center with Derek Brunson and Edmen Shahbazyan in the main event

In the co-main event of the evening, the ladies will take centre stage. Scotlands most famous UFC fighter Joanne Calderwood has the potential of sealing herself a title opportunity – currently ranked third, a significant win for JoJo could be a life-changing one.

Plenty of betting lines and markets are currently available; let's attempt to find some value in this weekend's UFC Fight Night co-main event

Joanne Calderwood

Introduction, Background & UFC Career

Former multiple division and title holder in muay thai, Joanne Calderwood, has been grafting her way through the UFC rankings and has landed in a perfect position. Both number one and number two ranked fighters in the division have had their opportunity at gold, leaving the third-ranked Joanne in the lineup for championship status.

Born and raised in Irvine, Scotland, before 'UFC veteran' status she began MMA in her early teens and has been addicted ever since. As the first professional female fighter from Scotland, her popularity has rapidly risen through the years.

Now competing at the highest level of the sport, JoJo may well be in line for Shevchenko and the flyweight championship before the weekends out.

Octagon Strengths

  • Former Muay Thai Champion 19-2.
  • High output striker.
  • Size and reach advantage.

Octagon Weaknesses

  • Can sometimes lack aggression.
  • Susceptible to takedowns.

Jennifer Maia

Introduction, Background & UFC Career

UFC flyweight Jennifer Maia doesn't hold the best record (2-2) but with significant victories over Roxanne Modafferi & Alexis Davis has managed to gain a number six place in the UFC rankings.

The Brazilian born BJJ black belt began her professional martial arts career in the chute boxing world and eventually led her to MMA in 2009.

A strong background in boxing is transparent in Maia's heavy-handed strikes, an untested ground game in the UFC hasn't shown her BJJ black belt but something for JoJo to take into consideration.

Octagon Strengths

  • BJJ Black Belt.
  • Strength advantage.

Octagon Weaknesses

  • Missed weight in her previous two bouts.
  • Cardio seems to have been an issue in said contests.

UFC Odds & Betting Thoughts

I anticipate a stand-up war with both girls showing confidence in this area, a robust grappling game has been obtained by JoJo across her six years in the UFC and should assist her in avoiding any takedowns from Maia. In–fact, JoJo has shown some impressive takedown offence of her own, and if we are to see a takedown, I wouldn't be surprised if the first shot came from her.

I think both girls hold advantages in the striking area, Maia shows some great combinations (over-hand right, left hook in particular) and gives plenty of power with them. Jojo, on the other hand, offers up a high volume of leg kicks and a more comprehensive mixture of strikes.

I believe we'll reach the scorecards in what could be a close one, but I have to side with JoJo taking the volume in the co-main event of the night.
