Neil Magny vs. Michael Chiesa

UFC Featherweight Bout

Wednesday, January 20th, 2021 – 6:05 PM EST at Fight Island

Neil Magny (24-7-0)

Neil Magny could potentially be the most underrated welterweight of this decade. A 17-6 record in the division sets him next to George Saint Pierre with more wins amongst welterweights than any other fighter.

Born in Brooklyn, New York but raised in Chicago, Magny excelled in education and became an Army veteran before competing in martial arts full-time. In 2010 he focused solely on MMA and secured a UFC contract within two years of fighting professionally.

Magny is now in the prime of his career. A substantial significant win over former champion Robbie Lawler now gives him the argument for title talks after another successfully big-named fight.

Michael Chiesa (17-4-0)

Michael Chiesa is another UFC competitor who could be overlooked in the current welterweight division, and sometimes we can't blame anyone. The welterweight division is filled with talent, and Chiesa is at the top of the pack.

Born in Colorado, USA, Chiesa found his love for martial arts through wrestling in school. He competed on the MMA regional scene starting in 2008 until eventually receiving the opportunity to compete on the UFC'S reality show (The Ultimate Fighter). He went on to win the tournament (2012) by defeating Al Iaquinta by submission.

Chiesa has since gone 10-4 in the UFC being matched up with some of the division's elite. He's worked his way through the rankings and now on a three-fight winning streak, he can claim a top-five ranking with a win on UFC's Fight Island.

How Can Magny Win?

Magny is a well versed martial artist, a clear path to victory isn't viable for such a fighter, but avoiding the ground game of Chiesa would probably be advisable.

Magny will probably excel on the feet, his distance control and distance awareness is a step-ahead of the challenger, and if Magny is to have his hand raised, then making this fight a stand up war is a must.

How Can Chiesa Win?

Micheal Chiesa has found success through his grappling offense, great takedown offense, and high-level Jiu-Jitsu skills, which have been a critical part of his journey.

He's no slouch in the standup, but when examining his fight tape, you can see he's comfortable grappling, scrambling, and spamming ground attacks.

A considerable presence for the 170lb division, size has been an advantage for Chiesa. However, versus Neil Magny, that factor will be removed.

Magny vs. Chiesa Betting Odds Advice

The sports betting current odds favor the veteran in Neil Magny at a 57% implied probability, no surprise given how closely matches these two fighters are.

I can't envision this fight ending quickly, and I wouldn't expect a first-round knockout or submission, which tempts me towards the over/under betting market. But on further inspection the odds are terrible, and something tells me the grappling of Chiesa could make this fight an ugly ground war favoring him.
