UFC Vegas 33: Hall vs. Strickland may not be the prettiest card, but it does have some value and some interesting matchups that could prove all of the haters wrong. Read below for my written breakdown of Cheyanne Buys vs. Gloria de Paula, and also check out our UFC video content listed below.
Cheyanne Buys vs. Gloria de Paula
UFC Women’s Strawweight Bout
Saturday, July 31, 2021 – 11:05 PM EDT at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas
Cheyanne “the Warrior Princess” Buys is an American mixed martial artist fighting out of Las Vegas, Nevada. Buys’ professional career began in 2018 under the Legacy Fighting Alliance promotion. She also competed in Invicta FC, Extreme Fighting Championship, and BTC Fight Promotions. Buys fought in Dana White’s Contender Series in August 2020; she won via unanimous decision against Hilarie Rose. Buys then made her UFC debut in March 2021 against Montserrat Ruiz and lost via unanimous decision. Of her accomplishments, she holds a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and a black belt in Taekwondo.
Gloria de Paula
Gloria “Glorinha” de Paula is a Brazilian mixed martial artist fighting out of Sao Paulo, Brazil. De Paula currently trains under Chute Boxe with Diego Lima. Her professional career began in 2017 under the promotion Batalha MMA. She then went on to fight under the promotions Thunder Fight, Max Fight, MMA Experience, and Standout Fighting Tournament. Glorinha made her UFC debut in March 2021 against Jinh Yu Frey and lost via unanimous decision.
At first glance and knowing the history of these martial artists, you would back Buys. She is the more consistent and more aggressive fighter out of the two.
Both ladies are coming off of a loss from their UFC debut, and both are desperate for a win in the UFC to show their value. It’s interesting when you realize that both ladies were in fact out grappled by their opponents which is why they resulted in a loss. However, they did out strike their opponents. So this weekend, there should be a major striking battle to see who is fit enough to be in the UFC.
Gloria de Paula stated in an interview how she let her nerves get the best of her in her UFC debut. She has been training heavily and even explained how she believes Buys will bring out the best in her. But can she overcome Buys’ aggressive demeanor?
Even though Buy was out grappled by Monterrat Ruiz in her UFC debut, she still has better offensive grappling skills than de Paula. Buys also out-struck Ruiz 31 to 15; so if there was no ground control from Ruiz, then that would have been Buys’ win.
If Gloria de Paula does pick up the output in her strikes against Buys, then this should be a very entertaining fight. If she isn’t able to against Buys, then you should see Buys easily dominating. I have to back the more consistent and aggressive fighter in this matchup.
