It’s been 15 years since Wrexham were eligible to play in the EFL Cup. Can they cause an upset against League One opposition? Read on for our Wrexham vs. Wigan picks based on the odds from our best soccer betting sites.

Wigan caused an upset of their own on Saturday. After suffering relegation from the Championship last season, the Latics began this campaign with -8 points because the club had failed to pay its players on multiple occasions. Following an exodus before the 2023-24 season kicked off, there was little optimism around the club. But they went to League One favorites Derby County over the weekend and won. They’re still rock bottom with -5 points, but they will be buoyed by their performance.

Wrexham hadn’t lost at home since Nov. 2021 until Saturday. MK Dons were two leagues above the Welsh club just a few months ago, so it was always going to be a test. They have home advantage for Tuesday’s tilt, and they’ll be hoping to be in the draw for the second round when Premier League clubs enter the competition.

Here is our best Wrexham vs. Wigan EFL Cup pick (odds via our best sports betting apps; pick confidence based on a 1-to-5-star scale).

Wrexham will be without Paul Mullin for their return to the EFL Cup. The striker is recovering from four cracked ribs and a collapsed lung, which he sustained in the friendly with Manchester United last month. The Red Dragons will, however, have new signing James McClean available to make his debut.

The Ireland international was signed from Wigan on Friday and was ineligible to play in Saturday's season opener. McClean, who earned his 100th Ireland cap in the summer, brings a wealth of league experience to the Red Dragons and will be fired up against his former employers.

The Latics’ xGA on Saturday was 1.88. Wrexham’s xG was 2.18. The question with the EFL Cup is how seriously are clubs going to take it? For a team like Wigan, who are fighting for their existence and starting at -8 points, making points up in League One is top priority. Promotion from League Two is equally important for Wrexham, but so too is getting that first win of the season to keep the positive momentum at the club.

Their owners would love nothing more than a Premier League tie in the next round. Phil Parkinson has built a winning culture in Wales. This tie has home advantage against a team that will be more concerned about getting three points against Northampton on Saturday. Don’t be surprised to see youth team players being given a run out for the Latics to build up their matchday experience.

Wrexham will want this more, their fans will be up for it, we’ll take them SU.

The line has moved dramatically since Sunday. Over the weekend, the odds of Wrexham to win SU were plus-money. The Red Dragons are now clear favorites, with Wigan as high as +290 at FanDuel to win.

Wigan has too many problems off the field, and they need to move up that League One table as quickly as possible. They can’t do that until they’ve made up for the points deduction. This is a cup competition, Wrexham are at home, they’ll want to prove themselves against higher league opponents, and Wigan could field a much weaker team. With all those factors, I’m confidently sticking four stars on this play.

The books are expecting goals in this match, with odds down at -130 for the Over at PointsBet. Under 2.5 goals is +105 via DraftKings.
