Manchester United vs. Villareal

Wednesday, May 26, 2021 – 03:00 PM ET at Stadion Energa Gdansk

  • Manchester United have avoided defeat in seven of their previous eight Europa League fixtures.
  • Villareal is undefeated in their previous 13 Europa League matches.
  • Villareal has avoided defeat at halftime in their previous 13 Europa League games.
  • On average, Manchester United have conceded 0.75 goals in their Europa League fixtures.
  • Villareal is conceding an average of 0.62 goals during their Europa League matches.

The second most prestigious trophy in the European club competition will deliver silverware for either Manchester United or Villareal this year. European squads have fought their way through the group standings, the elimination finals have been settled, and all that remains is for one team to perform in the final of this years Europa Cup final.

Manchester United and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Under the tutelage of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Manchester United have owned a successful domestic term. Although first place in the Premier League was not acquired, a second-place finish combined with a Europa Cup final position is positive. Finishing five points above third place Chelsea and twelve points below title winners Manchester City, we can take a lot from this season, including newfound confidence in the managerial skills of Solskjaer.

Without any hesitation, Bruno Fernandes is no doubt the necessary peripheral for United’s squad this term; through Premier League, Europa League, and Champions League fixtures, he has netted 27 goals with 14 assists.

Villareal and Unai Emery

Villareal has not delivered the same success during their domestic attempts this term; they finished 7th in the La Liga table and could not provide the same consistency they found during the Europa League competition. A battle with Sevilla for a fourth place finish in the table could not be warranted, resulting in a must-win scenario during the Europa League final should they want a chance in next year's Champions League. Finishing in seventh place also means they won’t be in next season’s Europa League, making this year's final important for a shot in European competition next term.

The excellent news, Unai Emery is the most successful manager in Europa League history. Emery won the same crown with Sevilla for three years consecutively. He knows what it takes to win these high-pressure competitions, and his squad in the underdog position shouldn’t worry the Spaniard.

Final Thoughts: Europa League Final Betting Picks

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer likes to utilize a 4-2-3-1 formation; David de Gea has already been positioned as the goalkeeper, which we all expected. In front of de Gea, we should have Victor Lindelof, Luke Shaw, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Harry McGuire. However, McGuire has been given a deadline to reach the training ground this Tuesday or else the injury pestered Englishman will not have a starting place for the final. Scott McTominay and Fred will be behind a free-flowing Fernandes, Mason Greenwood, and Rashford on the flanks. Cavani, per usual, will be the head of the formation should the blueprint of Solskjaer remain as we usually know it.

Solskjaer is eager to collect a trophy, and this week could well be the end of his drought. His team is the top sportsbooks’ favorite to win the cup, and we agree. The Europa cup will positively end United’s successful season, and I do not believe they will allow Villareal to ruin that. Having defeated AC Milan, Real Sociedad, and Roma to reach the finals, I predict the “Red Devils” will have more than enough to see off a Villareal squad who have lost four of their previous nine fixtures.
