It’s a jampacked weekend in the MLS offering fans of the premier American soccer league plenty of quality encounters to bet on, one of which is the sole focus of this column: the Vancouver Whitecaps vs. LA Galaxy.
A massive gulf exists between this pair in the Western Conference table. And as things currently stand – with the Vancouver Whitecaps ranked 13th and riding woeful form while the LA Galaxy are sat pretty in third place and in fine form in general – the soccer betting markets tip quite rightly in favor of the former across multiple top-rated sportsbooks.
So, the questions to consider here are whether the Whitecaps can deliver a shocking upset this weekend or whether the LA Galaxy will heap more misery on the Canadians?
Vancouver Whitecaps vs. Los Angeles Galaxy
Saturday, July 17, 2021 – 10:00 PM EDT at Rio Tinto Stadium
Vancouver Whitecaps Freefalling
The Vancouver Whitecaps are struggling in 2021 something awful and their campaign is in tatters. Well, it doesn’t get any worse than hitting rock bottom, does it?
Through 12 fixtures, Vancouver’s record is a paltry 2-3-7 and nine points, which is good enough to prop up the Western Conference table. Most recently, they’re coming off a 4-0 drumming by Real Salt Lake – the team that’s fostering the Whitecaps at Rio Tinto Stadium for the 2021 MLS season.
While the loss to Real Salt Lake wasn’t surprising given the soccer odds, it was nevertheless a dispirited performance against Real Salt Lake last week that didn’t provide good optics for manager Marc Dos Santos. Santos is coming increasingly under fire as the Whitecaps’ losses mount with each passing game. In fact, the loss to Real Salt Lake saw his boys clock in their eighth consecutive defeat. So, one really wonders just how much more leeway he’s going to get before he gets the sack.
Unfortunately, De Santos is getting no favors this week with a tough matchup against an in-form LA Galaxy side that will be chomping at the bit to heap more misery on Vancouver. Moreover, De Santos will have to overcome certain personnel absences and injuries. He will have to adjust to some absences this week, most notably first-choice goalkeeper Maxime Crepau and forward Lucas Cavallini as they’ve been called up for international duty. Elsewhere, All Baldisimo, Gaspar, and Ricketts have been struggling with injuries of late.
LA Galaxy in Good Form
The LA Galaxy are in third place behind an 8-0-4 mark and 24 points through 12 fixtures this season, a mark that includes 3-0-2 record on the road. Most recently, LA Galaxy are coming off a 3-1 drumming of FC Dallas as Greg Vanney’s side neatly returned to winning form last week.
The Galaxy took advantage of an off-form Dallas side to bounce back from only their fourth defeat this season – 2-0 loss to Sporting KC, one of their biggest rivals in the conference. It was an energetic performance overall by the Galaxy with Rayan Raveloson and Kévin Cabral scoring their first MLS goals on the night.
Greg Vanney is facing some roster decisions this weekend with Javier Hernandez Chicharito rated doubtful for the match, while Alvarez, dos Santos, Fisher, Gonzalez, and Lletget are on international duty.
Soccer Predictions and Picks
The LA Galaxy are the superior side in this matchup and they’ll be riding a wave of confidence into this game. Anything short of a victory will be considered a setback by Vanney because the freefalling Vancouver Whitecaps are ripe for the taking. Never mind it will also be a proper upset in the betting as this match is being tipped firmly with the visitors across most sports betting sites.
So wholly off form and off-color are the Whitecaps, with their campaign a complete mess to boot, that it’s hard to see how they’ll be able to orchestrate an upset over the Galaxy – either with a win or a draw. As such, the choice soccer pick is to back the Galaxy for a road win here.
