The Serie A is going with a midweek fixture without big clashes. However, that could be tricky for the favorites as the schedule adds up to all those games played endlessly every midweek along last month. The soccer odds on Milan are very favorable due to late injuries, but the Rossoneri seem to have recovered their confidence. The best surprise could be Sassuolo against Napoli, and then the Derby della Lanterna with some surprising stat.
Genoa vs. Sampdoria
Wednesday, March 03, 2021 – 02:45 PM EST at Stadio Marassi
The 118th Derby della Lanterna got a long list of fights, vibes, kicks, and cards. In fact, it is the Italian derby the most affected by fans, and that - combined to a more limited quality compared to other cities' derbies - always produced a high level of intensity, but not exactly a great football show on a quality level. The count says 43 wins for Sampdoria, 34 for Genoa, and 40 draws.
Two real specialists will be on the bench: Ballardini is at his fourth spell with Genoa, and previously he never lost his 4 derbies, with 2 wins and 2 draws; Ranieri, incredibly, along his infinite career has only lost 2 derbies, exactly with Sampdoria back in July and November. But as said before, normally in the Genoa derby, the entertainment is on the stand, not on the pitch. But something has changed. In fact, the crowded stands of Stadio Marassi - very close to the pitch - normally made their pressure felt on players' necks, always taking a toll, hardly producing a scoresheet with many goals, much less with both teams scoring.
The last three derbies (those played in a pandemic with empty stands) had instead a both teams scoring outcome. And if you think it isn't such a great change, well... consider that for 10 years the three of Genova's derbies didn't end consecutively with both teams scoring. Last but not least, in last weekend's round, Genoa massively rotated the team, saving energies for the team in the derby. Sampdoria thought about it too by initially resting Keita and Quagliarella.
AC Milan vs. Udinese
Wednesday, March 03, 2021 - 02:45 PM EST at San Siro
The funeral service for the Milan ambitions was already starting. Too early though, AC Milan isn't up there by chance. True, they had 15 penalties in favor, which is 10 more than any other team, a totally crazy stat, but 10 of those were anyway fair penalties. Milan is there cause they deserve it, and against Roma, not only did they finally win after four winless games, but the Rossoneri also had their best performance in 2021.
The dark side of the moon was represented by injuries, Ibrahimovic will be out for 3 weeks also missing the Europa League clash with Manchester United, and Calhanoglu will miss this game. But the Serie A odds on Milan look really overpriced. Udinese is coming from a streak of good results, but they're always having their flat-line performance, never better or worse, just solid. Udinese hopes to make the most of the few chances they can create, as it happened against Milan.
Sassuolo vs. Napoli
Wednesday, March 03, 2021 - 12:30 PM EST at Mapei Stadium
A resting weekend for Sassuolo, whose game versus Torino was postponed due to Covid at Torino’s camp. On the other side, Napoli had to fight to take a win against Benevento. Napoli has many injuries, although they recovered Mertens; but all in all, it's a struggle for them to score. Meanwhile, Sassuolo might not have restored their offensive ability yet, but at least they're keeping their defensive solidity, and they are definitely in need of making points.
