The Liga FPD in Costa Rica resumed the Torneo Clausura 2020 without fans last Tuesday and it was very successful. This Saturday, Santos de Guápiles will host Deportivo Saprissa in a very important game for both teams.
The competition was suspended on March 17th because of the coronavirus pandemic and right now every team has played 16 of the 22 games in the first stage of the tournament.
Santos de Guápiles vs. Deportivo Saprissa

Santos de Guápiles Takes Care of U Universitarios
Santos de Guápiles dominated U Universitarios on the road, winning 3-1. It was their first victory in eight games. This prompted them to fire head coach Johnny Chaves and hire Luis Antonio Marín. This was Marín’s second game in charge of the team and he’s already had over two months working with them.
Wednesday’s game wasn’t as easy as the scoreboard indicates. U Universitarios is in last place and pretty much destined for relegation. This made them desperate to get something out of this game but in the end Santos de Guápiles proved to be too much to handle.
The first half was played with good rhythm and both teams were determined to find the net. U Universitarios took the lead with a Hernán Fenner penalty at the 27th minute. Goalkeeper Douglas Forvis made the foul and Fenner converted.
Falling behind didn’t make Santos de Guápiles change their game plan. The visitors kept pushing, trying to create opportunities for their strikers and at 34′ a Starling Matarrita’s cross found Juan Diego Madrigal, who tied the game just before halftime.
The second half had more of the same, Santos de Guápiles was relentless on offense, forcing U Universitarios to stay on their side of the field. U Universitarios just couldn’t create anything to counter and Santos de Guápiles scored two times thanks to Juan Pablo Fallas at the 63rd minute and Javon East at 71′.
Deportivo Saprissa Prevails Against Club Sport Herediano
Deportivo Saprissa didn’t play well against Club Sport Herediano on Wednesday but they did enough to get an important 1-0 win. Michael Barrantes scored the only goal of the game after just seven minutes of play and that’s all that the home team needed.
It seemed that the teams played the rest of the first half just to get it out of the way. It was a pretty boring game with few scoring chances. Club Sport Herediano has been struggling for a while and the suspension of the tournament didn’t help them. This team still has a lot of issues and it showed. They lacked effort and creativity, they played with fear and with no purpose.
Saprissa had complete control in the second half but the few chances to score they had were wasted. Esteban Alvarado did save Herediano from losing by more goals, just like I expected.
There are only six matchdays left to determine which four teams advance to the second round. Deportivo Saprissa is first in the standings with 36 points, just four ahead of Liga Deportiva Alajuelense.
Santos de Guápiles has 17 points in ninth place, eight points behind Jicaral for fourth place and a spot in the next phase. A draw or a loss is not an option for them, particularly at home. Having no fans in attendance negates some of their home field advantage but teams usually have a hard time visiting this stadium.
Deportivo Saprissa can play more conservatively because they don’t need the win so much and they usually love to just pass the ball around and control the pace of the game. Santos de Guápiles. I took the Under in my last two plays and it cashed both times. Saprissa is overrated and Santos de Guápiles isn’t Borussia Dortmund.
