Atletico San Luis vs. Deportivo Toluca FC
Sunday, August 2, 2020 – 12:00 PM EDT
Toluca will host San Luis this weekend searching for their first points of the season after losing 3-1 versus high flying Monterrey. Do not worry too much about that result as Monterrey boast the most talented squad in this league and are favorites to win the title. Toluca actually had a decent showing as it was 2-1 until late in the match. Toluca were much more active that the scoresheet suggests as The Red Devils managed eleven shots, five being on target. Toluca did lose star midfielder Leo Fernandez to Tigres this summer, but they do have enough depth through the middle to score a few goals on Sunday. Center forward Michael Estrada is supremely talented and will put the ball away should he find himself with a few chances. Atletico San Luis are weak in the back so it should be a field day for Toluca’s attack.
On the other side of the pitch we have Atletico San Luis who are coming off a 1-1 draw versus Juarez. It was a strange match for San Luis who were on the front foot over the first thirty minutes of the match, but then seemed to lay off and sit in deep at half time. San Luis could have easily gotten forward and killed the game off as Juarez was teetering defensively. Manager Guillermo Vazquez’s decision cost him three points as Juarez equalized late in the second half. This time out, I see San Luis working to get forward as they want to expose a Toluca side that struggles defensively. Toluca’s defense was statistically one of the worst in Mexico last season, and they did nothing over the summer to bolster that defense.

Queretaro FC vs. Mazatlan FC
Sunday, August 2, 2020 – 5:00 PM EDT
Both teams in this match came into this season with a complete overhaul in their respective sides. Queretaro were sold over the summer and as a result they lost more players than anyone else in the division, including star midfielder Marcel Ruiz. However, even with the heavy losses they came out in round one against Pumas and managed to score two goals. I see this trend continue into the second week of the season against Mazatlan. Mazatlan are in dire straits right now, and I believe they will finish this season as one of the worst teams in the league.
Mazatlan, formerly Monarcas Morelia, picked up during the offseason and moved to the Pacific Coast. In doing so, they lost one of the best managers in the league in Pablo Puede. New manager Paco Palencia has installed the idea of playing the ball out from the back and Mazatlan has struggled to do so. Defensively this club are a liability as they got pummeled 4-1 against a Puebla side that isn’t exactly renowned for their offensive prowess. Mazatlan should finish with one of the worst defensive records in the league this season.

Club Leon vs. Monterrey
Monday, August 3, 2020 – 9:00 PM EDT
It’s an early season clash of the titans for Monday night’s soccer pick as Leon host league favorites Monterrey. Leon come off the back of a season where they finished the Apertura second place and followed that effort up with another second place finish in the shortened Clausura. The reason behind Leon’s success is simple, they score loads of goals. Jean Meneses is a menace in the middle of the park, and newcomer Emanuel Gigliotti should make his debut after being loaned out from Toluca. Ex-Arsenal star Joel Campbell just signed a new contract to remain at the club and is a super-sub coming off the bench. Skipper Ignacio Ambriz plays a pure attacking style at all costs, so do not expect Leon to lay off the gas in this affair.
Monterrey were the biggest disappointment in Liga MX last season, and that is an understatement. Boasting what is clearly the most talented side in the league, Monterrey finished dead last after ten matches in the Clausura. The long layoff due to COVID was the best thing that could have happened to the Rayados. Monterrey have had time to reflect and reorganize their squad and it really showed in their 3-1 win over Toluca. Funes Mori is the standout name in this lineup as the ex-Benfica forward bagged two goals in the opener. Depth is going to be Monterrey’s strong point as they can bring in experienced players like Miguel Layun, Maxi Meza, and Vincent Janssen. The back line for Rayados is still a huge question mark as they allowed seventeen goals over ten matches in the Clausura. I expect fireworks over the entire ninety minutes.
