Everton's 2021-22 campaign was tumultuous, to say the least. The Toffees guaranteed survival in the Premier League in the last game of the season after coming back from a 2-0 deficit at halftime to win 3-2 in dramatic fashion. With a full preseason to prepare his team, manager and former Chelsea legend Frank Lampard will be hoping for a more comfortable season this time around, but losing top striker Richarlison will hurt.

For Chelsea, last season was a successful one that feels like a disappointment. Although they won the UEFA Super Cup, the FIFA Club World Cup, and improved their position in the Premier League table from the previous season, they lost two cup finals to Liverpool and crashed out of the Champions League as defending champions.

Chelsea have spent big in the transfer window as a result, signing forward Raheem Sterling from Manchester City and Kalidou Koulibaly from Italian club Napoli to try to rebuild a defense that has suffered the departures of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen. More reinforcements could be on the way.

Here are my Premier League picks and predictions for Saturday's game between Chelsea and Everton (odds via FanDuel Sportsbook).

Chelsea to win and Under 4.5 (-119)

Everton have had a disastrous preseason, looking listless against Arsenal and losing 4-0 to MLS side Minnesota United. Everton did beat Chelsea, Arsenal, and Manchester United at home last season, but it's fair to question whether that home form can carry over to this season. In fact, that 1-0 win against Chelsea came on Matchday 35, right as Everton were in the thick of a relegation battle and Chelsea were essentially locked into a top-four spot. The desperation level for Everton simply won't be there on Matchday 1.

The biggest issue facing Chelsea heading into this season is still the lack of a reliable striker. The Romelu Lukaku experiment failed miserably, and Sterling is more of a winger than a striker. But that is a full-season question, not one for this game. Everton ranked 16th in goals against and 12th in expected goals against last season, as well as 11th in xGA at home. There's nothing to suggest from preseason results nor moves on the transfer market that those figures will improve dramatically.

To give this some more juice, we'll add Under 4.5 goals to this. Only two of Chelsea's 18 away games last season featured more than five goals. Chelsea will still win this game, but it will be tight.

Mount to score (+290)

With all the uncertainty at the striker position for Chelsea, it's probably best to target someone we know can score from either the midfield or in a more forward position: Mason Mount.

Mount scored 11 goals in the league last season to lead Chelsea, only one of which was from the penalty spot. He recorded career highs in goals per 90 minutes, xG, and xG per 90. With no out-and-out striker, there's an opportunity for him to get more involved in goal-scoring opportunities.

Whether putting him in the midfield or using him as a winger in a 3-4-3, Mount provides great value to score in this one. Make sure you get it at FanDuel, where you can get it at +290 compared to DraftKings' +250.
