Will Democrats Play Nice Or Again Go Viral On Debate Stage?

The winner of the next week’s second, two-evening debate between the Democratic presidential hopefuls may have already been determined – CNN.

Variety reports the cable news network is seeking a $300,000 commitment in advertising on the network before the sponsor can purchase commercial time during the debates. Those spots would go for about $110,000 per 30 seconds, according to Variety.

Currently, advertisers pay between $7,000 and $12,000 per 30-second ad during CNN primetime.

The higher price tag has everything to with how many people they expect will be watching on one or both nights of the Democratic political slam. Of the first debate, approximately 15.3 watched night one and 18.1 million watched night two.

Of course, the second night of the debate spawned a viral moment that ran through days of news cycles – the clash between former Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Kamala Harris regarding school busing and race.

“There is significant demand around our debates,’ Katrina Cukaj. an executive vice president of ad sales at WarnerMedia, the AT&T unit that houses CNN told Variety. “There are some really intense storylines that came out of that [previous] debate. I think the curiosity around those storylines is at a peak.

“I will tell you, we are nearly sold out. We’ve got a couple of pending accounts still in there, but we are going to be done pretty much any day now,’ Cukaj continued.

It is that viral moment and the potential for others that likely prompted CNN’s upping its advertising commitment and prices and also generated nearly a dozen prop bets on Bovada.

Topics on the bets range from fashion choices to how many times Biden will mention former President Obama to who might speak Spanish to how many tweets President Trump may send.

And, who knows, maybe lightning will strike twice, after all Biden and Harris will be back on stage together on night July 31th. Afterall, Harris got a serious bump up in the polls and in fundraiser after her exchange with Biden.

The random draw for both evenings lineup also has Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Sen. Bernie Sanders facing each other for the first time on July 30.

Debating on July 30 will be: Montana Gov. Steve Bullock, South Bend (Ind.) Mayor Pete Buttigieg, Maryland Rep. John Delaney, Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper, Sen. Amy Klobuchar, former Texas Rep. Beto O’Rourke, Ohio Rep. Tim Ryan, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren and author Marianne Williamson.

On the debate stage on night two will be: Colorado Sen. Michael Bennet, former Vice President Joe Biden, New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker, former HUD Secretary Julian Castro, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, California Sen. Kamala Harris, Washington Gov. Jay Inslee and businessman Andrew Yang.

For many in this debate, it may be their last opportunity to make a splash on primetime TV as the Democratic National Party is doubling the threshold to qualify in participate in the next two debates.

The two-night Democratic Presidential Debate airs Tuesday and Wednesday night on CNN.
