Will Donald Trump seek a comeback? And if he does, what are his chances of returning to the White House in 2024? Find out as we preview the betting odds which are on the move again in recent weeks.
It’s been a rough couple of weeks for the Biden administration. The planned pull out of US armed forces from Afghanistan blew up spectacularly in their faces and descended into one of the worst humanitarian crises in recent memory. Indeed, Biden and vice president Kamala Harris have seen their polling numbers drop significantly, prompting some interesting movement in political betting markets.
Donald Trump Presidential Odds
Across multiple sportsbooks, Trump odds are quite competitive in US Presidential betting markets. He’s not the top bet; that’s the principality of the incumbent president Joe Biden. This is largely because in American history, incumbency yields almost 90% success. Only three elected presidents have failed to win a second term in office – Jimmy Carter, George W. H. Bush and Donald Trump. As per BetOnline (see BetOnline Review), Biden is the favorite at +325 to win the 2024 US Elections.
However, this week, and to the chagrin of his most ardent critics, Trump has leapfrogged vice president Kamala Harris into second place on the politics odds board. As things currently stand, Trump is priced at +400 to win the 2024 US Presidential race, which represents his lowest odds and the narrowest gap between Trump and Biden since the former was sent packing out of the White House in January.
Kamala Harris, by contrast, has slipped to third overall in the betting with odds of +425 to win the 2024 US Elections and thus effectively become the first female president of the United States. Of course, the gap between Harris and Trump is negligible and represents and even smaller gap in the odds compared to the gap between Trump and Biden. Nevertheless, it’s the first time Harris has slipped behind Trump in the running.
History provides little guidance on the many questions that have emerged this year regarding the US presidency. Even more so, there’s little precedent for a former president running again, never mind winning a third bid for the presidency. Furthermore, there’s never been a female US president in history. This is now another scenario that is fast emerging, despite the Biden presidency being less than a year-old. Let’s not forget, it’s only recently that Harris made history by becoming the first-ever female vice president.
The lack of precedent never bothered Trump before though. After all, he had no political experience when he ran for his first term in office but he defied the political odds then to win the 2016 US Elections by a hefty margin over Hillary Clinton.
U.S. 2024 Presidential Election Odds
The top bets to win the 2024 Presidential elections are as follows, with Biden, Trump and Harris leading the charge followed by Ron DeSantis (at more than double the politics odds) and then Pete Buttigieg and Nick Haley.
