Florida governor Ron DeSantis is enjoying an inexplicable wave of popularity and in recent weeks, he’s seen his political odds dip dramatically in several key 2024 US Election markets.

To begin with, DeSantis is now the newly-minted co-favorite with Trump to get the nod from the Republican party. Additionally, he’s the fourth-best bet in the overall presidential race. The race is still featured as a three-horse race between incumbent president Joe Biden, vice president Kamala Harris and former president Donald Trump Sr. However, DeSantis’ odds are on the move and strengthening with each passing month. That’s something to pay close attention to, even though we are still so far away from the start of electioneering.

DeSantis an Alternative To Trump?

The Florida governor has been quietly establishing himself in GOP circles as an alternative to Donald Trump. This doesn’t mean that DeSantis would win a head-to-head battle with Trump. The Republican party, as far as reports go, is deeply committed to Trump and his MAGA brand. However, should Trump decide not to run in the 2024 US Elections, DeSantis is positioned to be the next best choice. On the flip side, if Trump does run, DeSantis’s position makes him a frontrunner to become Trump’s running mate.

Trump’s former vice president Mike Pence was at pains to distance himself from the president over the controversy surrounding the 2020 US Elections. So, it doesn’t seem likely that Trump and Pence will come together for a second term in office.

The current political betting market is interesting, particularly how DeSantis’ recent favor stands in stark contrast to the current climate in his state and mainstream media reporting that paints a less than flattering picture of the Florida governor. The Guardian published an article by Richard Luscombe last month with a rather damming heading, “‘The Pied Piper leading us off a cliff: Florida governor condemned as Covid surges.”

Miami Beach mayor, Dan Gelber coined the phrase “Pied Piper” according to the article in frustration with DeSantis’ refusal to resort to any national or worldwide recognized government mandates in the fight against coronavirus.

The Sunshine state is gripped with surging Covid-19 cases, hospitals are bursting at the seams and the death count is mounting worryingly. And yet, DeSantis is adamant his way is the right way to counter the growing crisis. He is staying the course by banning all Covid-19 restrictions, including mask-wearing. And under no circumstance is he going to close the economy by implementing lockdowns, regional or state-wide.

So far, his response has been to roll out Covid-19 treatment clinics to counter the resurgence of the virus. He even suggested president Joe Biden might take a page from his manual.

In spite of the open criticism, DeSantis’ star is rising in Republican circles. He isn’t backing down anytime soon and that resilience underscores his political odds. DeSantis remains a heavy favorite to be re-elected governor of Florida next November. And his odds across multiple sports betting sites have improved for the 2024 US Elections. Those may be a long way away, but Ron DeSantis is certainly a Republican candidate to keep an eye on right now and in the future.

Odds For 2024 Republican Nominee

Former President Donald Trump has had the market for the Republican nominee cornered ever since he was forced out of the White House in January. However, for the first time in 2021, Trump has serious competition for the Republican nomination. DeSantis has somehow emerged as co-favorite for the GOP vote. At least, this is the case with Bovada (visit our Bovada Review), where Trump and DeSantis are both priced at +250. The next best bet after the pair is Trump’s former UN Ambassador, Nikki Haley, whose political odds are set at +700.

Odds For 2024 US Presidential Elections

As per top sportsbook Bovada, Ron DeSantis is the fourth-best bet after the top trio of Kamala Harris, Joe Biden, and Donald Trump. Although DeSantis’ odds are almost double the odds for Trump, the top Republican bet, the Florida governor is clearly considered the biggest rival for the established trio and the best outside bet to win the 2024 US Elections at this point in time.
