Rather simple today looking at the NHL odds. On Hump Day we have three choices for sports picks from the schedule-makers, thus we will make a trio of picks, easy right?

The hockey world was turned upside down for a night with Columbus winning for a second straight time and Montreal was denied a 10-0 start when losing at Vancouver. This hockey handicapper enjoyed another winning day with NHL picks and goes after three in a row on Wednesday.

Struggling Team Fail to Score in Ottawa
When first looking at this Calgary and Ottawa contest matchup, when reviewing the money line, not much to find. The Flames are 2-7 on the season and 1-3 on the road and does not appear to have many answers at the moment. Ottawa is 3-5 SU and is bitterly frustrated still seeking their first win at the Canadien Tire Centre, which has them with four losses, two in OT.

Since this appears very much like choosing the lesser of two evils, moved over to totals where we find sportsbooks like Wagerweb have this at 5.5. Mind you, this would not fall under the touts category of "lock", rather just a better option.

A case could this should be an easy OVER play, with Ottawa 22nd in goals allowed at 3.0 and Calgary 29th at 3.89. But I'm also looking at the offense and the Flames are at 1.88 GPG and Senators are scoring only 2.2 on home ice. Calgary is 24-5 UNDER on the road when the total is 5.5 and 10-1 UNDER after tallying one goal or less.

Washington's Offense the Difference in Win over Pittsburgh
To go along with the day, it is also unusual to have two teams collide with such an extended rest. Pittsburgh has won four of five after an 0-3 start and had not played a game since Saturday, when they won at Nashville 2-1. Washington (6-1) swept a three-game Western swing and has now won five in a row, however, that 7-4 victory over Edmonton in previous outing occurred on Friday. This makes it harder to handicap, not exactly who has more or less energy coming into this confrontation.

Let's go with what we do know, both goaltenders has performed well in the first month with the Penguins Marc-Andre Fluery allowing 2.02 goals a game, having made all eight starts. Braden Holtby has been between the pipes in all but one of the Capitals contests and has 2.03 goals against average.

The opening NHL odds had Washington at -145 on the money line and besides that fact they are home, they lead the league in scoring and have found the back of the net at least four times in seven contests. Contrast that with the Penguins, who have only scored as many as three goals once all season. With evenly matched goalies, I will back the better offense at home.

NFL Pick: Capitals -149 at Pinnacle

Nashville Outlast San Jose
Nashville is off to another great at 6-1-1, with both losses by a single goal. As expected, netminder Pekka Rinne has gotten off to another strong start with a 1.84 goals against average. The Predators penalty killing has also been quite good in stopping 23 of 27 man down situations. However, the Nashville offense has not helped the defense, with six goals scored in last five visits to the Shark Tank, leading to two wins.

San Jose at 6-3 SU is all over the place. The offense and defense were outstanding in winning first five contests, then everything fell apart in losing three straight (outscored 14-4), before rebounding with 5-2 triumph over Carolina. Former Predator Joel Ward is off to a hot start with new club, scoring five goals and having eight points.

The Sharks have a pair of 2-0 wins at home over Nashville and has never blanked any team three consecutive times. Given the success San Jose has on home ice and against the Preds since 1996 (23-11-1), thought the oddsmakers would have them higher than -125 favorites. Yet when digging deeper into the numbers, I found Nashville is 22-7 after a game with four or fewer total goals scored and the Sharks 4-12 at home having lost two of three.

NFL Pick: Predators -110 at Bet365
