The New York Rangers have owned Sunday winning 53 of their last 79 games but Champion Handicapper Dana Lane explains why Detroit is the right side tonight as the light continues to dim on the 'Joe'.

Last night we scored another plus money winner with the Los Angeles Kings getting the best of the Washington Capitals, 4-2.  Tonight, we go back to the ‘Joe’ for another Original Six match-up as the New York Rangers and Detroit Red Wings meet for the 610th time with Red Wings holding a 278-228-103 advantage, including a 181-81-46 record at home.

The line on this one opened with New York being the -120 favorite but after 75% of all tickets written coming in on the Rangers, the books have moved New York to -145.  The best number we can find on the Red Wings is +127 at 5Dimes.  I recommend waiting to bet this game until the last minute because there isn’t any indication that there will be Red Wings buy back money, both the public and professionals are on New York.

Against the Chicago Blackhawks on Friday the Wings treated the ‘Hawks last visit to the ‘Joe’ as their Stanley Cup with this being the last time these two original six teams would skate there.  I can’t come up with any reason to bet this game any other way especially with the advantage of Henrik Lundqvist not getting the start in goal for New York.  The Wings will be just as focused to send a sour goodbye message to New York as Chicago.

Antti Raanta (13-6-0, .922, 2.32) will get the chance to show Las Vegas that he might deserve their expansion consideration as he’ll be the Rangers number one netminder for the next 2-3 weeks with Lundqvist nursing a muscle strain in his hip. Magnus Hellberg will back up Raanta.  Petr Mrazek (15-18-7, .901, 2.99) gets today’s start for Detroit.

In addition to Raanta starting, the Rangers will also see Rick Nash and Michael Grabner potentially returning to the Rangers line-up.  You know how I feel about impact players coming back to the line-up after being out a while.  They usually need a couple games get acclimated with their linemates leading to sloppy hockey.

On the other side of the ice, Anthony Mantha may be back for the Wings after being scratched against Chicago.  His return is different than returning from an injury as its being speculated that Mantha was scratched to inspire a better effort out of the 22-yr old rookie.

The Red Wings gap coverage has been better which doesn’t allow teams to push the puck up the ice as easy.  Jeff Blashill’s team seems to be playing with confidence and aggression, traits that will force opponents to turn the puck over, creating offensive chances.  With some potential additions to the Rangers line-up it’s safe to envision that the Wings style of late could make it difficult for New York to find quality scoring chances early.  If the Rangers defensemen are having trouble getting pucks up to a forward in their own end this will be an easy winner.

Let’s crush another plus money winner with the Wings tonight.
