The Washington Capitals (41-24-7, 89pts, +13) have a golden opportunity to put some distance between themselves and the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Metro Division. ‘Over’ is 5-0 in the Capitals last five games against the Metropolitan Division

Washington owns a 3-pt lead over Pittsburgh for the division lead but they also have a game in hand which is tonight against the Montreal Canadiens (27-36-12, 66pts, -49). The puck drops at 7:00 ET/4:00 PT and can be seen on the NHL Network, TVAS, Sportsnet, and NBC Sports-Washington.

The Montreal Canadiens, who haven’t won a Stanley Cup in 25 years, won’t be in line to win another this year either. The Habs have dropped 18 of their last 38 games and 37 of 52 games against teams with a winning record. They’re also just 6-23 against the Eastern Conference, just to give you a taste of where their troubles started. Claude Julien may have thought about becoming Montreal’s head coach if he knew then what he knows now.

As expected the Washington Capitals opened as a large road favorite according to the SBR Odds page. The Capitals are now -190 at Bovada after opening at -175. Clearly the capitals are the better of the two teams but this number is way over my comfort level if I want to maintain a strong bankroll. The public doesn’t seem to care about or even have a bankroll which is the only reason one would find this number to be attractive.

The ‘total’ is a different story. SBR opened the number at 5.5, -120, Over but some strong ‘under’ money has the line sitting at ‘over’, -115 in a few spots. At Bovada the number has gone the other way with the ‘over’ now at -125.

In mid-January, the Canadiens handed the Capitals a 3-2, home loss. LW Max Pacioretty scored twice and added an assist in the victory at the Capital One Arena. The key to our ‘over’ wager is in the first period, unlike in the first meeting where Washington managed just four first period shots; they’ll jump on Montreal early and often in this one. We just need the Habs to give us their standard two goals.

Starting Goaltenders: Washington Capitals Philipp Grubauer (12-9-3, 2.29, .926)-Projected

Montreal Canadiens Carey Price (15-23-6, 3.03, .903)-Confirmed

This will not be a letdown spot as some have projected. The Capitals know that this is a must win game against the Habs who have an eye on a different kind of postseason. If you’ve ever been in an NHL lockeroom you’ll know that when a team wins the first game of a trip the room is full of energy that tends to carry over to the next road game. The Capitals scored just one goal against the Wings (1-0 shutout, Thursday, but by all accounts the Capitals feel great about their effort. Montreal is plying their

second of a back to back after pitching their own shutout against the Sabres last night. I did think we’d get a better number because the public loves to bet what they just saw but for tonight only I’ll ride with the ‘wise guys’ and the public.
