I don’t think I’ve ever done this before but I got to thinking as I was trying to choose which play was going to be my play of the day. Instead of choosing, I went with both of them.

The Anaheim Ducks travel to Wells Fargo Center to play their seventh road game against the Philadelphia Flyers who have won three of their last four. Puck drops at 7:00 ET/4:00 PT.

Hampus Lindholm returns to the Ducks line-up tonight giving them a defensive boost. Anaheim hasn’t been terrible defensively but there is room for improvement. They allow just 2.71 goals per game which ranks them 13th right now but as the season progresses they’ll want to be fewer than 2.50 going into the postseason. Anaheim has allowed way too many shots on net (36.9) dead last in the league. The return of Lindholm will reunite him with Josh Manson on the top pairing with Francois Beauchemin and Brandon Montour on the second. Lindholm, who will eat up minutes, adds size and the ability to shut down opposing forwards. He’ll take his place on the second power play unit with Antoine Vermette.

This is a spot where the Ducks have been extremely profitable winning their last six trips into Philadelphia.

Tampa Bay Lightning vs Carolina Hurricanes

My second play features the Tampa Bay Lightning rolling into North Carolina to take on the Hurricanes at PNC Arena, puck drops at 7:00 ET/4:00 PT

My colleagues on the ‘Ice Guys’ were laughing this morning at this selection which is great with all due respect. First its great for the show but secondly winning at wagering isn’t always as simple as betting the better team. If that was the case there wouldn’t be any sportsbooks. I try to dig deep into the psychology of games because that’s where you can get a deeper understanding of a team’s state of mind which I’ve always figured was as important as their physical ability.

As I stated this morning, I think people are overlooking the Carolina speed and the fact that their Fenwick rating is far better than Tampa’s. A Fenwick rating is determined by figuring out a teams shots+misses vs. their opponents shots+misses. This not only gives you an indication of how many times the puck is getting to the net but it’s an indication of how much a team has the puck on their stick. The Lightning has lit it up for four goals a game but their Fenwick rating is just 48.4%. By comparison the

Hurricanes are sitting at 52.7% which makes sense considering they’ve allowed over 27 shots just once this season. From a handicapping standpoint, I’m confident that the Hurricanes will own the majority of chances and so do the bookmakers who have made the ‘Canes a favorite.
