The Canucks are coming off a 4-3 loss to Dallas last night while the Coyotes lick their wounds from a Tuesday night blanking in Boston. Let’s peruse the NHL odds for this game.

Vancouver Canucks (4-6, -3.4 units)
The Canucks seem to have a penchant for losing overtime games this season as they have dropped four of five so far this season including a 4-3 heartbreaker to the Dallas Stars last night. Vancouver started off slowly, failing to register a shot in the first 12 minutes of the contest but eventually they got the engines cranking with goals from Alexandre Burrows, Alexander Edler and Radim Vrbata. Goaltender Ryan Miller allowed four goals on 29 shots and should be in net tonight but his status is unconfirmed as of this writing.

The Sedin boys are once again the crown jewel of this Canucks team with Daniel leading all point-getters with two goals and six assists while brother Henrik owns a pair of goals and three assists. Nineteen-year-old Jared McCann has been a pleasant surprise with a team high four goals on the young season. Veteran netminder Ryan Miller has started every game this season registering a 2.16 goals against average and a .923 save percentage. However, when the money is on the line he has come up empty in losing four of five overtime contests. Not exactly the kind of clutch goaltending that inspires faith in those who have backed the Canucks in their NHL picks.

Arizona Coyotes (5-5, +3.2 units)
The Coyotes pocketed four points in the standings with road victories over Ottawa and Toronto winning by the scores of 4-1 and 4-3 respectively. But their fifth road game in seven nights clearly demonstrated the toll that the NHL grind can take as they were overwhelmed in Boston on Tuesday evening by the score of 6-0. Starting goaltender Mike Smith allowed a season high six goals on 27 shots as the team could muster no offense and was lethargic in their defensive zone.

Team point co-leader Martin Hanzal is hoping to return to the ice after being held out against the Bruins Tuesday night with a lower body injury. Hanzal has no goals on the season but his 10 assists have contributed mightily to whatever success the Coyotes have had. In addition Arizona may see the return of Antoine Vermette (lower body) and defenseman Connor Murphy (lower body) which would be a big boost to the club’s chances of copping a victory at home tonight.

NHL Picks
Mike Smith is between the pipes for Arizona tonight and I believe that to be a good thing after he was run ragged in his last start. He and his defense will get a chance to atone for their lackluster play and have now had two days rest to prepare for this home tilt against the Canucks. In addition if the Coyotes can get Hanzal back in uniform along with the others who are hopeful to return to action tonight then Arizona could be the right side to play in this one especially since the Canucks had to go into an extra period only to lose last night and then hop a plane to the desert.

I think this a sound spot for the Coyotes especially since the NHL odds makers are making this a coin flip. The Canucks should be dog tired and must brace for a meeting with the Flyers on Monday. Over the course of the past two seasons Arizona is 4-1 (+3.5 Units) against the spread versus the Canucks when playing in the desert. We say this streak continues tonight.
