Of the 10 games on the board for tonight, the sportsbooks' NHL odds had four of them at -200 or higher, which is something you normally do not see till later, not in the first 11 days of the season.

The numbers are what they are and for making NHL picks, you can either selectively lay down the heavy lumber or take a shot at a long shot to come in. Myself, going with mixed bag, taking one of the heavyweights and couple of other teams for sports picks, trying to build on 9-3 record the past four days in the rink.

Stars Shine and Nip Florida
Dallas and Florida have both started 3-1 and for the Stars this Game 2 of a four-game road trip, after defeating Tampa Bay 5-3 two nights ago as +140 underdogs. WagerWeb sent Dallas out as -110 moneyline favorites and this number has been bouncing around with Florida around -110 as last look. This week, Jason Spezza has been factor for Dallas with four goals and two assists and will look to sneak the puck behind presumed starting goalie Roberto Luongo for Florida.

The Panthers are receiving unbelievable contribution from 43-year old Jaromir Jagr, who has six points in four games. This is Jagr's best start in nine years when he had 11 points in six games when with the New York Rangers. A victory by Florida would equal their best start since 1995-96, when they made the franchise's lone appearance in the Stanley Cup Final.

This NHL handicapper is not counting on that happening, with the Dallas proving to be a very good road team with a 10-3 away record off a road win and they are 5-0 in this stretch if the last game they won by two or more goals.

NHL Pick: Dallas +105 at Pinnacle

Chicago Cruises by Columbus
It has not been a good week for the defending Stanley Cup champions, losing at Philadelphia 3-0 and following that up by being pounded by Pittsburgh 4-1. The Blackhawks will be back the United Center and while it has not been fun, at least they are not Columbus.

The Blue Jackets are 0-5 to start the year and they are being outscored in decisive fashion, 26-12. It has been 20 years since a team was this horrible defensively, when San Jose allowed 27 goals in their first five outings. Goalie Sergei Bobrovsky has played his part in Columbus' worst start ever, but he's not receiving help from the backliners, as opposing teams are getting quality shot attempts repeatedly.

The departures of Brandan Saad and four-time 30-goal scorer Patrick Sharp has played a part in Chicago scoring just 2.0 goals a game. While not everyone is going to like seeing -200 NHL odds, with the Jackets 0-9 after allowing four goals or more in three straight games, their first victory will come elsewhere.

NHL Pick: Chicago -238 at Heritage

Calgary Carves Up Edmonton
Edmonton has not been made the playoffs in nine years and with an 0-4 start, 10 seasons sitting at home after the regular season concludes is looking like a real possibility. Calgary does not exactly have the hockey world bragging them up either with their 1-3 start.

The Flames are -150 home favorites and will look to three players in lead them to a win. Dennis Wideman has eight points in his last eight meetings with the Oilers, while teammate Sean Monahan has the same amount of points in nine contests. After tallying five points in the first three games, Johnny Gaudreau was not on the score-sheet in loss at Winnipeg, but should have many more chances in this one.

Calgary enters this contest 9-3 after losing three of four, while Edmonton is 2-19 in road games after allowing four goals or more in two consecutive outings.

NHL Pick: Calgary +115 at 5Dimes
