The Dallas Stars visit the undefeated Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday night in what should be an intriguing affair. If you like the favorite, you’ll have to lay -170 with the Penguins on the NHL odds as they’re expected to take care of business.

The Dallas Stars Can Win Because…
They’ve been quite competitive to start the season. They started out with a shootout loss to the Chicago Blackhawks and in their latest game, went to Columbus and left with a win. Although they sandwiched those efforts with a disappointing loss in Nashville, overall this team has looked good.

The Pens are a perfect 2-0-0 so far this season but nobody is quite certain just yet that all is right in Penguins land. While their offense is clicking, they’ve still given up six goals in two games and Marc-Andre Fleury has a subpar 3.00 GAA and a .889 save percentage.

Dallas has the offensive weapons to take advantage. Don’t be surprised if they come away with the win.

The Pittsburgh Penguins Can Win Because…
They’ve started the season like they’ve been shot out of a cannon. They were supposed to be a team in transition but the team has looked dominant so far. They edged Anaheim 6-4 and then stomped Toronto 5-2. They were supposed to be weaker on offense after all of the changes but that hasn’t been the case. On Thursday, they should see Kari Lehtonen between the pipes but he hasn’t been effective versus Pittsburgh. He’s dropped four of his last six outings against them while posting a 3.15 GAA.

The Pens have won eight of the last 11 meetings between the teams including seven of the last nine in Pittsburgh. All signs point to a win for them, so they’re the better choice in this spot.

Outlook & Pick
The Pens are a sizable favorite on the NHL odds here but it’s probably the right price. They’re playing well enough that a traveling Stars team shouldn’t give them any problems. However, with the price being where it is, I’ll instead look to the total for my NHL picks. With the Pens offensive clicking and their defense struggling, we should see an over here. There’s two good offenses on the ice and neither is solid in their own end.

NHL Pick: Over 5.5 at The Greek
