Devils and Leafs back from the Break
The New Jersey Devils will entertain the Toronto Maple Leafs tonight at 7:35 PM ET. My area of concentration will be on the total in this game. According to the NHL betting odds at 5Dimes the current posted total is 5.5. These teams have met once this season, and New Jersey skated away with a 5-3 win at Toronto.

Scoring Drought
The one thing that the Toronto has been able to hang their hats on this season is their ability to generate offense. However, that’s came to a grinding halt recently. The Leafs have gone under the total in five of their previous six games, and they’ve played a huge role in those results by scoring just five goals combined in those six contests. Toronto has scored one goal or less in seven of their last ten games, and was held scoreless in three of those outings. As a matter of fact, they’ve scored just fourteen goals combined over those previous ten, and five of those occurred in one game.

Rare Total for a Devils Game
The total of 5.5 tonight will snap a string of fourteen consecutive games for the Devils in which the number was 5.0. New Jersey last saw a total of 5.5 on 12/19/2014 versus the high scoring Tampa Bay Lightning. New Jersey has seen a total of 5.5 in only eleven of their forty-seven games this season, and they’ve seen eight of those eleven say under the total. Each of their other thirty-six games had a total of 5.0. The Devils are averaging just 2.3 goals per game this season. They’ve also averaged only 21.0 shots on goal per game in their previous fourteen contests. Tonight’s slated starter in goal for the Devils is Cory Schneider. He’s seen just four of his sixteen starts at home this season go over the total, and has compiled a stellar .922 save percentage during that span.

Final Analysis
Hoping that the Leafs are going to snap out of their offensive funk right now, would be similar to hoping for a poker inside straight on the river card. It’s possible but highly improbable. I look for New Jersey to implement their usual tight checking conservative game plan. My lean is for this contest to be a low scoring affair, and that’s the direction I’ll be headed when making my NHL picks.

Free NHL Pick: Under 5.5 at 5Dimes

[/]{"component":"oddswidget", "eventId":305846, "sportsbooksIds":[19,43,227,1096,999996,93,238,123,139], "LineTypeId":5, "PeriodTypeId":1}[/]
